Ain't No Mountain High Enough!

European Piano Party - Lucerne Switzerland - Taking the piano to the top of Mount Pilatus

Kawai Grand Piano Going up Mt Pilatus in Lucerne Switzerland

Not something you see every day. This is a Kawai baby grand piano being loaded onto the steepest cog railway in the world for a ride to the top of Mt Pilatus. Why? A piano party of course! Piano Forums Members in Europe organized a piano party on top of a mountain in the Swiss Alps. Last year they held one in Lisbon, Portugal, next year it's in Italy. These folks know how to throw a piano party!

Kudos to the local piano shop for providing the piano just for the party, and to the movers who wrestled the piano up the mountain.
For more pictures and stories from the people who were there, see European Piano Party. The link picks up on page 10 of the thread. If you'd like to see how it all got organized, simply start at page one.

80,000!

80,000 what?
Registered Members on our Piano Forums!
This is the number of registered members we recently surpassed, a new milestone for us.
The number (80,347 as of this morning) does not count people who have chosen to leave, or been escorted out, banned, etc. The counter behind the scenes indicates the latest member to join is #86,545.

And even at that the number of registered members is only a small portion of our audience. For example, check the "e;Who's Online"e; box at any given moment and you will find there are nearly ten times as many "guests" on the forums as registered (and signed in) members.

Example from 08/12/15 10:30 a.m. EST
visitors to piano forums

Note that when I grabbed this screen shot there were 117 registered members online (meaning they were signed in), 29 invisible (no they weren't using Harry Potter's cloak, they chose to not have their user name show in the who's online listing), 1300 guests (some of whom were registered members who hadn't bothered to sign in), and 14 spiders. For those who may not know, spider is the term for the program search engines use to crawl and index web sites. Essentially it's a program that visits web sites collecting data about what is on the web site and storing it in huge databases. They then use very sophisticated and complicated algorithms to mine all this information and deliver the most relevant results when you enter a search query.

I realize the majority of people stop by, get some information and move on, but that's ok. I'm just thankful that we have the opportunity to help in some small way with their piano and/or music related questions.
In fact the forums are only one portion of our overall audience. On an average day we welcome nearly 15,000 unique visitors

New Forum - Products & Services for Sale

This is in response to the people who expressed an interest in advertising their products and/or services on Piano World.
Specifically those who find our regular advertising offerings a bit more than they feel comfortable spending.
While our banner/display ads and classified ads are the most effective, this new forum will provide good exposure at cheap rates.
This new forum should be a good resource for people wishing to reach our forums audience, particularly if your product or service is inexpensive. Full details are at this link New Sales & Products Forum Info

We will remind our forums audience to check these forums for piano and music related products and services.
In fact we're reminding you now.

The new forum itself is located Here and in fact contains an ad for PIANO - Evolution Design and Performance (A New Apple iBook 2015). Check it out!

Piano Parties!
We love piano parties! If you are planning to hold one, please let us know. Piano parties are a great way to share your love of playing (and listening) and an opportunity to get non-players interested.

New Piano Owners Forum!

PLEASE - Visit this forum and congratulate these folks on their New Piano!

I've created a sub-forum under the Piano Forum specifically as a place for posts about members getting a new (to them) piano.
I love reading the threads posted by members who have finally purchased their piano. Seeing the pictures and hearing the stories reminds me of one of the most important reasons we are here, to help each other.
Unfortunately these posts get buried quickly as new threads get created.
If you recently got a piano, or you know of a thread where someone is talking about getting their new piano, please let me know. I'd love to move the threads to this one central place for all to share in the joy of owning and playing a piano.
The New Piano Owners forum lives here , right under the primary Piano Forum.
Jeffrey Biegel, Steve Barta - New CD!
Symphonic Arrangement - Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio

World renowned concert pianist (and long time forums member) Jeffrey Biegel is the guest soloist on a new album " Symphonic Arrangement - Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio"
Arranger: Steve Barta (also a piano forums member)
Guest Soloists: Hubert Laws- Flute; Jeffrey Biegel Piano.

I've known Jeffrey for some years now, a giant in the concert pianist world (and yet very humble). And I've had the pleasure of meeting Steve Barta and his lovely wife at their home in Colorado. I even worked up the courage to play his piano in front of him and Jeffrey! Steve is an amazing jazz talent, composer, arranger, performer, and a genuinely nice guy.

100 Years Old - Still Playing Piano!
Irving Fields' piano playing has been music to millions of people's ears for decades.
And the sounds become even sweeter when people realize that the 5-foot-6-inch man behind the big piano turns 100 years old on Tuesday.
He appears to be the oldest working musician in the United States, and Fields told CNBC he has no plans to slow down.
"Retire? No, don't do that," Fields advised. "Get a hobby if you want to do something. Keep the mind working. Do something you love." Fields plays four nights a week at Nino's Tuscany in New York City and three days at the Park Lane Hotel, also in New York. More About 100 Year Old Piano Player

Live Piano Venues
This is an ongoing project to collect listings of places where you can still hear live piano music, and places where you can (maybe) play the piano. We're talking about restaurants, bars, hotels, airports, etc. Help us grow the list.
The goal is to eventually organize it by location (anyone want to help?).

I've just added a new location, the hospital where my Kathy is going to have her knees replaced has a Yamaha grand in the lobby. Listings of Live Piano Venues

Do you know of a particularly good thread you think others would enjoy?
Send me an email with a link to the thread (webmaster@pianoworld.com) or send it from within the thread itself. I'll take a look and consider listing it in a future newsletter.
And if you find one that would make a really good addition to one of our FAQ areas, please let me know that too.

Posting Pictures on the Piano Forums

PLEASE UPLOAD YOUR PICTURES TO OUR SERVERS!

Please understand that we much prefer you upload a copy of your pictures to our servers using this gallery feature, or our older uploader, rather than just linking to them hosted elsewhere.
We constantly find that pictures linked from one of the free services on the web inevitably end up with broken links.

Our picture gallery tool automatically creates three size pictures. Thumb, Medium (best for display in a forum thread) and Full (full original size of the image you uploaded).
We are often asked how to post pictures in the forums. There is a Picture Gallery Forum specifically here to make this easier.
Essentially the steps are:
1.) Upload your pictures to the gallery 2.) Copy and paste the url for each picture where you want them in your post (each picture will have the correct syntax for embedding the picture in your thread).

Full instructions for using the gallery can be found here... Posting Pictures in the Forums
And finally, if you still aren't sure how to upload your pictures, contact me and I'll help.

Are You Taking Care of Your Piano?

Piano Need Tuning? Did you know your piano should be tuned at least twice a year?
As a piano tuner I sometimes receive calls from customers who tell me they aren't sure if their piano actually needs to be tuned. Let's think about this. Have you ever watched a violinist in an orchestra? They often tune up before every piece, and they only have four strings to contend with. The average piano has about 235 strings! And how do you make music on a piano? By whacking those strings with felt wrapped devices called hammers!
Yes, your piano needs to be tuned.

And it isn't just playing that knocks your piano out of tune, changes in temperature and humidity cause all those wood components of your piano to swell and shrink, helping to stretch and shrink the string lengths, contributing to driving the piano out of tune.
Yes, your piano needs to be tuned.

On a Personal Note - My Partner
If you've made it this far reading our newsletter, you're probably someone who knows a little about us.
My partner in business and life, Kathleen (Kathy) Ford is going in for her first full knee replacement tomorrow (Wednesday, August 19th).
She's in good hands, but I'm still a little anxious. Luckily there is a Yamaha grand piano in the lobby of the hospital, I plan to play it to help me relax. Your positive thoughts, prayers, get well cards would all be appreciated. Two weeks after the first one, she's going back to have the second one done. She's braver then me :-)
