Storm in the Northeast

As I type this hurricane Sandy is bearing down on the mid-atlantic/northeast states. Our thoughts are with all of our friends in the areas impacted. Please be careful and be safe. When the storm has passed and you have a moment (or before it hits if you prefer), please drop by the forums and let us know you are ok.
How Can We Make the Advice Given on Piano World Better?

This is a thread that has generated some interesting thoughts and ideas.

My personal feeling is that Piano World and the forums do a pretty good job of helping people who are searching for answers about the piano, whether it's about the instruments themselves, or playing, recording, etc.
Granted a lot of the "advice" is offered by amateurs but that's ok, and some of it is just plain wrong. However in most cases posted threads are self-correcting as more (and maybe better informed) people chime in.

I can't begin to tell you how many times I see posts thanking the forums for helping, which tells me overall we're doing a pretty good job.
Of course the advantage of having an open forum is that biases and agendas are quickly countered by other posters. And I believe on average the people seeking help/answers realize it is an open forum and mostly just the opinions of its members, but that's ok, because it helps to balance against the hype usually found in advertising.
And we have the advantage of being able to present multiple views/opinions/responses not found in other resources.

In fact this is one of the primary reasons I personally tend to stay out of the conversations, which eliminates people wondering if I am biasing my opinion because the subject happens to be one of our advertisers (I wouldn't, but staying out of the conversation removes any suspicion).

Which is why you will find the good, the bad, and the ugly all posted. We don't edit or filter and then try to force feed you what we feel is the right answer (or the one our advertisers would prefer). We do however watch the threads and ask our moderators to step in when things get out of hand or too far off track.

Well enough about my thoughts, visit the thread and feel free to contribute your thoughts on how we can make things better.
(One suggestion was posting video/audio recordings of various pianos (as well as still pictures), I know that opens a new can of worms, but like the basic idea).

Please use the Google Custom Search Box in the upper left corner of the page.
It gives you the ability you to search all posts (and the rest of Piano World) whereas the ubb search function is restricted because it slows the forums down and doesn't index everything.

Any Piano Parties Coming Up?

What? You don't know what a Piano Forums Party is?
Essentially it's an opportunity for members to meet each other with no pressure. The parties are usually held at a member's home, and everyone brings a little something (pot luck style, or just ask the host). Each member (and/or their guest) takes a turn playing the piano. Nobody judges anybody's playing, it isn't a contest. It's a chance to share a common interest in pianos and piano music.
We really love to have pictures and comments posted after the event.

If you'd like to get some ideas from past Piano Forums Parties (as well as tours, cruises, and more), Check Out This Area On the Forums
SPECIAL NOTE: THE FORUMS ABF PIANO RECITALS ARE MOVING

For those of you who may not be familiar with the ABF (Adult Beginner's Forum) Recitals, they were the brainchild of one mr_super-hunky back in 2006. Essentially they are a series of piano recitals posted online by members of the ABF.
Our good friend Sam S. has been maintaining the index and hosting of all the recital files for some time now. And he has kindly offered to continue to help maintain the technical side of things (thanks very much Sam), but the entire collection is being migrated over to the Piano World servers, even as we speak.
Sam is working with Ken Chase (Ken is our sys-admin and a true guru of networks, databases, programming, etc.).
The expectation is we will soon have everything in it's new home on the Piano World servers at recitals.pianoworld.com

The hope is that in the future we may be able to expand on the recitals theme, which is why I had Ken create an entire sub-domain specifically for recitals.

Right now this area contains the start of the migration Sam has been handling.
There are still a few glitches to be worked out (links that point to the old site for example), but it's coming along nicely.

We will make another announcement when we feel everything is up and running smoothly, probably via a special issue of this newsletter as well as posts in the ABF and elsewhere.

Again our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has worked so hard to make the recitals a success all these years, and to everyone who participated, I hope you will all continue to be a part of the online piano recitals.
All the Best,
Frank B. - Founder, Owner & Host

Multiple Accounts - A No-No!

Please do not create multiple accounts on our forums!

The practice is deceptive and could get you banned. There are very few exceptions to this rule, and they must be approved on a case-by-case basis.
If more than one person in your household wants to log onto the forums with their own account, please be sure to contact a moderator or me directly BEFORE they create their account. We track all IP addresses and automatically receive reports when multiple accounts show up against one IP.
If/when we discover you have multiple accounts we may ban both unless we hear from you with a legitimate reason.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Do You Visit Our Other Forums?
Do You Know Why You Should?

What do I mean? Many of our members (and guests) find a specific forum from our list and stay with that one forum.

Now if you are primarily interested in discussing playing the piano with other pianist, you probably do want to mostly visit the Pianist Corner, or the Pianist Corner - Non Classical.

If you are searching for a new piano or curious about your old/current one, you likely want to be visiting the forum called simply Piano Forum.
Even so, you may find it interesting to pop into the Piano Tuner-Technician's forum, or the Teachers Forum occasionally just to see what is going on.

Or maybe drop in on the Digital Piano Forum to see what the latest keyboards are all about and what people are saying about them.

Did you even know we have an entire section of forums Just For Fun?
That's right, a collection of forums of stuff just for fun.

And one just for Composers

Than we have the Mechanical Music Forum for discussions about player pianos, nickelodeons, music boxes, and other mechanical musical instruments.

There's even one for Organs including electronic (think B3), theater, and pipe.

And don't forget to check Active Topics (see links at top of forums page) This shows you the most active discussions going on right now.

If that's not enough, try our Directory for information about some of the other 1000+ pages of Piano World. You'll even find music related jigsaw puzzles you can do online, and music word searches we created.

So see, there's lots more to explore on Piano World, check it out today.
Are You In the Piano Business?
Then You Should Be Advertising on Piano World!

It is more important now than ever to invest your advertising dollars wisely.

Of course you want to reach the maximum number of prospective customers for the least amount of costs.
That's where Piano World comes in!

Our piano forums recently passed the 66,000 registered members mark, and during the past year we've seen over six million unique visitors arrive at Piano World, and they've requested over thirty three million page views.

All of which adds up to making advertising on Piano World a smart move if you are in a piano related business.

Whether your piano business is local, national, or international, we can help.

ATTENTION PIANO MANUFACTURERS:
How much $$$$$ does your company spend a year on those glossy ads in magazines?
And what is the circulation of those magazines? 10,000, maybe even 25,000?
But they pretty much just go out to the same people month after month, while you spend thousands and thousands of dollars hoping to catch the interest of a few of their readers.

Try these numbers on for size:
Piano World Received Over 6 MILLION UNIQUE VISITORS Last year!
That's right, over 6 million unique visitors! And these were all people who raised their hands and said they were interested in something related to pianos and/or keyboards. And here is another statistic, we served up over 30 Million Page Views last year. (Compare our numbers with other piano/keyboard web sites and you will quickly realize the value of advertising on Piano World).

We can get your company and your products out in front of all these piano/keyboard loving people for an entire year for a whole lot less than you're spending on those static print ads.

Let's Talk Please contact me directly at frank_baxter@pianoworld.com, phone: 860-741-2625, or visit our Advertising Page for more information.

Kathy and I will also be attending the 2013 NAMM show and would be happy to meet with anyone who would like to discuss advertising. Of course we'd be happy to meet just to say hello too.
