PLEASE DO NOT POST IN THIS THREAD! USE THE DISCUSSION THREAD(S).[/b]

I am delighted to introduce our tenth quarterly Adult Beginners' Forum Recital. So, pull up a chair and have a listen.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask the audience to please refrain from commentary in this recital room.

A separate room has been provided for the purposes of intermezzo discussion. Please take any and all comments to the General Discussion Room and all critical discussion to the Critical Discussion Room.

Thank you.

A template has been created for those who wish to provide individualized feedback:

Response Template

In addition to the zip files linked below, mahlzeit has added a feature to his program that creates an online streaming player. Just click on that link to hear all the recital pieces without having to download the zip files.

For the convenience of forum members, mahlzeit's program has normalized the files for consistent volume and standardized the ID3 tags in a collection of zip files. This makes it easier to create personal CDs and playlists.

These zip files have been posted at the following URLs:

Recital 10 Zip 1
Recital 10 Zip 2
Recital 10 Zip 3
Recital 10 Zip 4
Recital 10 Zip 5
Recital 10 Zip 6
Recital 10 Zip 7
Recital 10 Zip 8

The zip files, along with past recitals, have also been uploaded to:

http://www.esnips.com/web/PWRecitals

Let me express my greatest thanks to five very special people: mr_super-hunky for coming up with the idea of our online recitals, which have proven to be more successful than any of us ever dreamed; Bob Muir for working out the technical details of pulling together the recital and doing so tirelessly for the first six, count 'em, six, recitals; LaValse for hosting the zip files and recital software on his server; Copper for also hosting the zip files and trouble-shooting help; and last but not least, mahlzeit for writing the absolutely fantastic web-based recital program that we are using. THANK YOU MAHLZEIT!!!

AGAIN: DO NOT REPLY OR POST ON THIS THREAD!![/b]

Title of piece:Etude de Valse, Op.83
Composer:Charles Mayer
Source of music:Sheet music
Instrument used:Yamaha P140
Recording method:Line-out to computer sound card line-in. Audacity.
Critical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:Charles Mayer (1799-1862) was a composer, pianist, and teacher. I fell in love with his Op.83 Etude de Valse when I first saw the score. The Etude starts with a lively main theme in D flat, which transitions to a mysterious, almost brooding middle section in b flat minor. The D flat main theme returns, marked "furiously", in octaves with a lot of extra notes thrown in for accompaniment. The Coda has a couple of leggiero (light) right hand runs up and down the keyboard, followed by a pretty downward figure, a "furious" double arpeggio, and four rolled final chords (hammered). The 4th from the last chord is written as G flat major, but I think this is an engraving error. Harmonically, it just doesn't sound right, so I play a b flat minor chord instead. To my ears, it works perfectly. I hope you like this energetic, throughly delightful Waltz.

The public domain score is here http://www.mediafire.com/?zuzscst2nsz

This is from the Japanese anime series Rurouni Kenshin. I do not know much about the series, I stumbled upon this while looking for an easy anime piece to learn. I am not certain, but I think it is played during the closing credits.

Title of piece:Nocturne in C# Minor Post.
Composer:Chopin
Source of music:Sheet music
Instrument used:Young Chang grand.
Recording method:Metro
Critical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:I thought I would go all the way and do a video recital. I did it a month ago and since then have decided that I played the nocturne way too fast. But now my piano is in the shop so I can't re-record. Thus my mp3 file is taken off the video as well. It's funny because I really had been practicing it quite slowly but for some reason when I started trying to record it I sped it up.

The nice thing about having it up on youtube is it gave my folks a chance to see me play. Their first comments were "Your piano sounds like hell" so one good thing that came out of this is that they are buying me a new set of hammers. It may not improve my playing but it should mellow out the sound of my Young Chang \:\) .

Composer:yann Tiersen
Source of music:Improvised from original score
Instrument used:Roland KR-7 digital
Recording method:digital piano to audacity
Critical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:Well, I tried very hard not to butcher this lovely piece too much!. While there is virtually very little of the original score left in its original form, I did try and keep the same melodies throughout the piece consistent with the melody from the original score.

Since I always play a piece the way I hear it in my head, I went with that concept on this one as well but somwhow the end of the piece turned into Bruce Hornsby and the range!!.

I'm not really sure how that could have possibly happened but it did so I kept it in; oh well.

This is a very beautiful piece and should be amongst the "staples" of beginner pieces to learn. There are some very good fingering techniques involved with this piece as well which makes it that much more worth the time to learn.

Additional info:I just mostly used Sudnow method to voice this from the sheet music. Sudnow has his own “dot” version, but I used my own voicing instead. My wife graded this version of mine as being a “B.” (That’s more kind than when I asked her to grade a saxophone thing I did, and she graded me a “D” on that, but was quick to lovingly add that I “looked good” playing the saxophone!). Title of piece:A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing
Composer:Billy Strayhorn
Source of music:Lead sheet
Instrument used:Yamaha P-120
Recording method:Audacity
Critical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:A strange but beautiful song written by Billy Strayhorn, who was Duke Ellington’s right-hand man. Jazz pianist Rob Arnold characterized it this way: “The chord changes on the bridge were written by a genius, or a madman. Or both.”

Title of piece:Etude Op 2
Composer:Scriabin
Source of music: Sheet music .
Instrument used:Yamaha U1 upright acoustic piano.
Recording method:Edirol R09 with back of piano miced - 9" from middle of soundboard. This is a 'live' (for want of a better word) recording - i.e. decide to record it - sit down and play it and submit the result. As such it has mishaps (especially weird tempos) and an interesting variety of background noises including traffic, my daughter coming out of the shower and the spin-dryer - not my daughter coming out of the spin-dryer - the spin-dryer itself \:\)
Critical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:Scriabin composed this when he was a teenager. There are lots of stories about it. It's said that like 'that' Rachmaninov prelude, he didn't like performing it himself, even though the public demanded it - but as his harmony developed over the years, he didn't like performing many of his early works. Horowitz, who was presented to Scriabin as a child, did enjoy performing it and there is a great video on youtube of him doing so. In general the piece is performed in a huge variety of tempos and styles. Hitting the notes of this piece is one thing, but its musical emergence by bringing out the various melodies from the chords and fitting the sections together to make a whole is quite another and in these respects this is still very much a work in progress for me; but a very enjoyable one because it really is a nice piece to sit down and fiddle about with; late at night I especially like playing it slowly and very quietly...
