Hi !!!

It's been quite a while since I last log into this forum and i still remembered the encouragement and advices I got several months ago.

I remember clearly that I started learning on a keyboard on August last year and I didnt even know notes A-G at that time. Later I bought a piano for my daughter in November and I pick up here and there by myself. Time flies and now it's already past 10 months I learned on a piano.

I've recorded 3 pieces and please be frank to let me know how bad am I playing and on what area should I focus to improve.

Excellent videos Lucky! Thanks for sharing. They sound great to me! Perhaps more advanced players can provide better tips for improvement.

Well, I dare say that as an adult beginner you do very well after only 10 months. I know people who have played for years and cannot do what you can. Just continue with scales and etudes, learn new pieces and practice the old ones over and over again.As time goes by, you will become more fluid and gain more control over your fingers. And you will enjoy playing the piano more every day. (I bet your family is very proud of you!)

Thanks Bob & Chatnoir, I know I have still a long long way to go before I am able to play decently. I am currently focus more on jazz/pop and want to play more church music but on the other hand, I will still set aside sometime for classical.

May I know what kind of etudes will be appropriate for me at this moment. I am thinking of learning this piece Sonatina in G Major by Beethoven but I think it's much above what I can do right now.

They were great. The first Clementi piece I've just learned over the summer after 3 years of lessons.... you are doing great!!

You can play that after just 10 months... I'm impressed. You have good hand independancy (is that a word?). Playing a total diffirent rythme with both hands. I'm having much trouble with that.
It's a totally diffirent style that I'm used to play, and technally more difficult.

Please, oh please, tell me you are not playing Clementi's Op 36 Sonatina 1,2,3 at 10 months.. I'm at 5 years and that piece gives me fits.. not to play it, but to play it to tempo.

i've been playing for five months and if i can play like you in another 5 i'll gladly say i'm making terrific progress.well done!

I'm playing the Bach Minuet in G and yours sounds familiar. I think that ChatNoir's comments are well chosen. Fluidity and control aren't where I'd like them to be, but I've made enough progress to know that more practice will bring improvement.

What are you worrying about?...for 10 months you are playing really well.

I don't know enough about classical music to comment about it but, you seemed very confident and fluent in your playing.

Nice work! You're doing very well for 10 months. Just a couple of comments I have:

1. try to think about "Arm weight" more -I see alot of extra "finger action" where you are using your fingers and upper hand as the source of energy for your playing.

2. I saw your fingers go flat in the LH quite a few times. Be very aware of your hand technique! Don't let bad habits persist. Get rid of those bad habits sooner than later!

3. How much hands seperate work do you do in practice? As was said, you don't seem to have any problems with independance, but I think there's a certain "singing quality" that is lacking from each side. Maybe try playing hands seperate while singing (with your voice) the part. Be aware of legato vs. stacatto and be aware of how the two sides sound together.

Go for the Beethoven Sonatina. I thought it was much easier to learn than the Bach minuet in your video. When I was learning the sonatina, I didn't care how long it took to learn, it was such a pleasure to play, especially the Romance.

10 months? Great job! Great to see someone starting out with the old favorites!

As for constructive criticism, Mound makes some good points. Try to keep your left wrist a little higher, and your right wrist both higher and more stationary (of course, it will move, but try for "not so much") Do you have a teacher, or are you going solo?

For the Baroque style, practicing the hands seperately striving for evenness is always good. The instruments of the period weren't very dynamic, so the music shouldn't really be played "expressively" (my opinion, please don't flame).

You've inspired me to learn the Clementi since my teacher wanted me to try something that worked the RH a little more than what I've been doing. It's a perfect difficulty level for me. I found it on the 'net, so I'll surprise her next lesson.

Great job. I would say working on your legato, too. But also this is something that comes with time. Switching over to songs that use chords, fifths, thirds, etc. help with that.
