Why would the same note have a stem going up on the right side and one going down on the left side? I was told it just means you can play the note with right or left hand.

Which piece of music?

Probably it doesnt mean either hand, since the one note can only be in one staff, which probably determines which hand.

I'm guessing there are two "parts" to the melody, one part with stems up, and one part with stems down, and maybe this one note is common to both parts?

O Sacred Head, Now Wounded is the hymn. I'ts the top F, bass clef. Also it's a quarter note in 4/4 timing. There are also two eight notes and two more quarter notes which I thought should complete the time allowed. I thought maybe it meant to press the note twice simultaneously.Help.

The answer from Lightnin seems to be right. You might have a choice as to which hand plays it but double stems indicates two voices (instrumental most likely) come together on the same pitch so the stem up is the higher voice and the stem down the lower voice. Voice used in musical terms does not necessarily mean vocal but a melodic line.

I found two versions of the music, at
http://www.sibeliusmusic.com/cgi-bin/show_score.pl?scoreid=11729

and http://ehymnal.com/osacred.shtml

(be ready at the speaker volume on the second)

These are rather different versions, the second appears simplified, but I dont find a note in either with both stems up and down?

The first has some notes with very long stems to another note in the treble staff, so it might look like it is going both up and down, but it is actually all stems down.

Sorry, I dont have that book, so I cannot see it.
Any chance you could scan it and post it here?
(see towards the end of the thread here "Need help with happy farmer" for how to do that)

Or can you identify which measure at
http://www.sibeliusmusic.com/cgi-bin/show_score.pl?scoreid=11729
and indicate how it might be different?

Just one lonely little f note with a stem going up on the right and one going down on the left.Looks like 2 notes ,but there is only ONE oval.

The song is the right song but my book plays it differently. It's f note right after 1st measure. The web site has an A note joined to the F.It's also got an eight note joined to it, mine's just a quarter F note with nothing else.

Sorry Denise, I dont know.

If the top stem only goes as tall as the A line (from the F line should only be the next line up, which would be short), then it could be a simple misprint, sounds like a missing oval, and so perhaps the A note really should be there, especially if that would then match the other version. This seems a good guess, but I cannot see what you see, and it is only a guess.

But if the top stem is full normal stem height (above the bass staff), then I dont know, but I would simply play it as written for now, and not worry about it. Then maybe show it to someone you can ask later, like your music teacher or someone involved with the music at church, etc.

Couldn't be a misprint. A bunch of other songs they use this type of note. In America the Beautiful they have a single eight note with a full stem sticking up on right and one down on the left. Weirdest looking thing, I guess.

As Lightnin said, this is a note which is common to two voices. (You asked the same question in the "Pianist Corner" forum a few days ago and got the same answer.) In an ensemble the instruments playing the two voices would play the note at the same time. Play it with whichever hand is most convenient. If you want to get picky, play it with the hand that is carrying the melody rather than the harmony.

The reason the version of the song Lightnin found is different is simply that the arranger did the harmony slightly differently. Generally with hymns there is no "standard" harmonization.
