To teach myself piano, I am working my way through The Piano Handbook by Carl Humphries. It comes with a CD so you can hear how all the exercises should sound and I am finding it very helpful. Unfortunately I have come to a place in Unit 2 where one of the sentences in my copy is partially missing. I'm hoping someone out there has a copy without this missing text and can fill me in. On page 57 about the second paragraph down, the sentence begins "Sharps or flats are shown in a set sequence in a key". In my copy the rest of the sentence is missing. The next text in my copy is "Each major key adds one more sharp...etc." If you have the book, please let me know how the sentence ends. Thanks so much.

I have that, but my copy is messed up there too (First Edition 2002). Mine says (literally):

Sharps or flats are shown in a set sequence in a key s Flat r Natural how many of them there are. Each major key adds one more sharp or flat...

From the context, my guess is the line is simply trying to roughly define key signatures very briefly in general, saying that they are composed of sharps or flats, in a prescribed order, and the number of sharps or flats defines the key signature.

Here is a good site that covers it too:

http://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory9.htm

and

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=key+signature+theory

will find a great many more.

Hi merralyn,

Unfortunately, that text is missing in my book as well. The first sentense of that paragraph ends in "key signature." He's saying that they are always shown in the sequence that follows, first F, then C, then G, then D, then A, then E, then B... and then... lol. Sorry lol. To recap, the order of sharps is F,C,G,D,A,E,B. The order of flats is the reverse (B,E,A,D,G,C,F). Key signatures are always written the same way, and there is an order to them...

I wrote out thier relationship a while ago, when I was learning scales. Turns out it also helps you remember the perfect fifths (a.k.a. dominant) of every scale (since thats how the next scale is chosen).

To get a scale that is not written there (i.e F Natural, or D Flat) just "multiply" through, with a flat, any of the scales written there and you will have your scale.

Notice that the Major scale is two identical scales back to back. This is why there is such a strong rlelation between dominant and tonic... because a dominant of a given major scale is the tonic of the following major scale.

Anyways, the missing words dont seem to be of crucial importance. I do hope it doesnt happen elsewhere in the book though.

I have the same error in my book.

Have you tried to email the publisher? They may have a correction for it. Let us know if you find out anything!
