Some time ago I found a book in my local music store called, as I remember, 'How to practise the piano'. I couldn't afford it at the time, but more recently decided to buy it. By this time the shop had changed hands, the stock been reduced and rearranged and the staff couldn't help! I can't remember the author - can anybody else identify it for me? It was about exactly what it says - not how to play, but how to practice. I haven't been able to locate it using the internet either, so I may have misremembered the title or perhaps it's OOP. It covered use of time, exercises, techniques, sight-reading, learning new pieces, building a repertoire... the lot. All the things which were not really discussed when I initially learned as a child.

Alternatively, if anybody could recommend another book covering the same ground, I'd be very grateful.

Many thanks.

Hi Lesley:

You can download C.C.Chang's book, "Fundamentals of Piano Practice" for free from his website:

Fundamentals of Piano Practice

I use it, but I ignore what he says about Hanon and Czerny, both of which are indispensable to me.

Hi,

I checked Amazon and came up with this title: How to Practise the Piano by Annie Pupin. Don't know it this it the right book.

Maybe if you do a Google search with the title you will find it. Let us know if you were able to find it. smile

I recently read The Practice Revolution by Philip Johnston, and I think it is very good. My favorite part is the games you can play with yourself to make sure you have a piece reliable (so you don't have to say "I played it much better at home"). Very useful for helping my daughter to enjoy practicing also. She has much more fun when she can play games and see progress.

Chang's book has a lot of good stuff, too.
