I used to watch TV without feeling guilty about not practicing. Ah, those carefree days..

Before piano... I had two kids (now aged 7 and 10). 'Nuff said: for a decade there I was immersed in diapers, pacifiers, Barney, and "Go Dog, Go." Fortunately they're now both old enough that they prefer to entertain themselves and don't need my constant supervision. Before kids... I had the tenure track. Publish or perish. Work every day, come home and go running and eat dinner. Work some more. Work Saturday and Sundays. Then I met my husband and got tenure and got married and now I will only work on weekends if I absolutely have to. I'm also a heck of a lot happier. The only thing I miss now that piano gets in the way of is reading for pleasure. I used to read 3 or more books a week. Now it's one every couple of weeks.

The piano I have was my grandmothers and it just stood there for many years, grinning at me most of the time, reminding me that I was totally without talent Before playing I had a tidy home, lots of flowers in my garden, and I spent some time watching all the Disney movies with my children. I also spent quite a lot of time with people that I did not like... I do not play that much, but playing piano has given me more self-esteem and I have learned to say no, so I don't spend time with people I don't like anymore ! Ragnhild

Can sympathise with you there, Monica. I got a brand new hardback book 8 days ago and yet I've only just reached the giddy heights of page 30

I used to play a lot of video games (a long time ago). More recently I had the absurd goal of becoming a successful basketball referee. The piano doesn't abuse me when I make a mistake, so it's a much better option.

I've been playing "at" the piano for a long time, so I'm not a beginner, but before I started taking lessons in January, I could fake my way through lead sheets, and read music (VERY slowly), but not much more. What this year has given me is the ability to actually read music while I play, and to play pieces that I never thought I'd be able to (Chopin's Prelude in C minor as on example.) I've also gone through the John Thompson 2nd and 3rd grade books (working on the last song now), and will move to the 4th grade book by Thanksgiving.
What's funny about learning to play 'right' is that it's helped my fake book playing as well. Hanon can be a drag, but it's helping me un-learn some of the hand gymnastics I've been doing to make things work....
Some of the learning can be tedious, but it's worth it...and I'm having a great time doing it, too.

Now I only read at night when I'm too tired to sit at the piano without falling asleep.

Played accordeon as a child, wishing I could play the piano... there was no money enough to afford it, so now, as adult... I play the piano . Surfed the internet, read books, etc. Now I'm piano addicted.

Welcome to the forum, Ina! I'm always glad to see a former accordion player... my story is the same as yours: I wanted to play the piano, we couldn't afford it, my mom got me an accordion instead. p.s. Piano addiction is a progressive disease. Be warned.

I used to play considerably more computer games. Now I only play one on a regular basis, if that. I hardly watch any TV, although I never used to watch that much before, just the odd film. I work on the occasional programming project and give up when I get frustrated with it not working
All I really do is play the piano, (try to!) compose and do social things, and I don't see a problem with that!
