Here's a question to ponder...is the piano a masculine instrument ? I think that there are instruments that lean toward being masculine, and some tend towards being feminine. The electric guitar, although shaped like a woman, is a masculine instrument, while the flute or clarinet is definitely feminine.

Why don't you crawl under the piano, look between its legs and judge for yourself.

I don't know about all pianos, but mine is definitely a male. So stubborn...and won't listen!!

I get no appreciation or recognition for all the long hours of labor, but when I make a mistake, he's there...loud and clear, blasting it out for all the whole to hear. bah

But "he's" always there for me, to lift my spirits and to fill some lonely hours with joy and beauty heart and asks for nothing in return, except a monthly dusting and a tuning twice a year. :p

Well, although you didn't mean it literally, the piano is a masculine word in Italian and French so perhaps that's what their opinion is!!
I personally think of the piano as a neutral instrument and don't really see it in general as male or female.
However, like Kathleen, I think my own piano at home leans towards the masculine. I know some guys who call their piano "she", so perhaps it depends what gender you are! wink

It depends entirely on the individual instrument. My piano is clearly female, and my reasons are THE SAME as those Kathleen offers above! She just comes to the opposite conclusion! laugh

Ray Charles and Billy Joel in "Baby Grand" call the piano "she". Tough to argue with those guys...

I can't tell yet. My piano is still a baby. Pianos don't show their gender until a few years later after they have matured. wink

i don't find it necessary to associate a piano to either sex. after all, it's music and sound we care and play on a piano.

Definately female,

She requires alot of money, she dominates whatever room she's in, and the slightest humidity or temperature change upsets her. wink

Definitely female:
- very good at social events
- can do more than one thing at a time laugh

BTW: in German, the piano (upright) is a neuter, grammatically. Grands are male.

My keyboard is female - must press buttons in the right order, demands attention, can make sounds I do not expect, no matter how much "prepare" time I put in I get it wrong, I try to be gentle but still screams at me if I use left hand, and, at certain moments once in a while, steals my heart and soul - capable of making me cry with joy at how beautiful our relationship can be.

Yea, its a girl.....

Depends on what is being played on it.

Ambi-sexed?

I am afraid of leaving my digital keyboard and my upright piano in the same room for fear of them producing a strange hybrid litter

Just a cautionary note to the gentlemen on this forum...

I was kidding with my wife and twin 21 year old daughters how I assumed the new piano must be a female because of its expected temperamental behavior. I last recall saying something about PMS...
I should be playing the piano again in a few months.
