I live in EST. Last time I checked Chicks vs Dudes it was too close to call. Now I can't view the ending numbers for August. confused

Yeah, but there is a silver lining. The chicks live on three players. the Dudes have a much deeper bench. In more statistical language, i'd bet that the variance of the time distribution among the chicks is a lot higher than the variance among the dudes. Or, to put it another way, if you removed the top three chicks and the bottom three chicks and compared the totals of the rest to the scores of the dudes with the top three and bottom three removed then the Dudes likely would win hands down (pun intended).

Allow me to be one of the first to congratulate both teams on a well played contest. Back and forth, up and down, last minute efforts, etc. A lot of fun led to a lot of practice, and a lot of improvement for over 60 of us.

Oh, yea, congrats chicks on pulling victory out of the teeth of defeat.

Another view we can take - it is summer, weather was reasonable, lots of stuff to do outside, but NOOOOOO, we played piano over and over and over....

I removed the 2 highest and 2 lowest from each team and if you do that, Dudes come out ahead by about 2,500 hours. But I kept in the entry for DUDEZRULZ, who managed to put in a negative 2400 hours for the Chicks. If you add back the hours Dudezrulz subtracted, it's pretty much a statistical dead heat.

The entire distribution is not all that skewed though - Some other interesting facts (keeping dudezrulz negative submission in)

Average(mean) daily practice (per person)

All - 49.3
Chicks - 49.0 minutes (it goes to 51.4 if we add back in the negative hour submission)
Dudes - 49.7 minutes (chicks have 1 more member)

Median practice

Chicks 38 minutes
Dudes - 45 minutes

Number of members averaging more than

--two hours a day
Chicks - 3
Dudes - 2

--more than 1 hour a day (including those with 2+)

Chicks - 9
Dudes - 10

--between 30 and 60 minutes a day

Chicks - 11
Dudes - 8

Of course, not everyone back papered their time for the whole month (I didn't)

Good Morning All:

Couldn't wait to get to my computer to see the final tally though I really had no doubt about the outcome. laugh

As gmm1 stated, we are all winners in this race. And I congratulate all who took part. It was exciting! thumb

However....

Quote
if you removed the top three chicks
as per Piano*Dad's suggestion...

Just where would you like to move us?? Off to some desert island, without a piano, never to be heard from again?? confused

We top three chicks worked our tails off in this endeavor, and I think it's extremely unfair to try to discount our contribution, even for only a theory.

I understand the reasoning behind it. Basically, that both the Chicks and the Dudes averaged out about the same. And that's great!! And the way it should be.

But all those if's.....

If I had more talent, I'd be....
If I had more money, I'd be...
If I were better looking....

I truly don't think any of those abstract conditions apply. After all, we WERE a part of this, and our effots SHOULD be considered, not tossed aside for some meaningless statistics.

OK, that said.... smile smile

Here are my happy faces because I don't want anyone to think I'm a sour-grape type of person. Just one who feels (like the other two, I hope) that we are not the exceptions, just people who have the same dedication and luckily, some extra time (in my case) to devote to the cause.

And, I happed to know that one (perhaps two) chicks really sacrificed a lot of sleep time to get in her time at the piano. Should we just ignore that?

Now, I better hide because I know there will be some flack from my comments. eek

But, honestly, I am not upset in the least. In actuality, I gained from this experience. I can play a few pieces a little better than I could a month ago. yippie

Again, cheers to all!!

Kathleen

Kathleen

The CHICKS did win (even with the subtraction by dudezrule.

Piano*Dad's point is just that on average, the Dudes and Chicks are pretty well matched. He was suggesting (for both teams) that we "truncate" or cut off the highest and lowest practicers to get a better idea of the "average"

I did that, and it didn't make as much difference as Piano*Dad would have liked.

The little stats I did suggests that on average the Chicks and Dudes are both putting in solid time at the piano. All should be proud of the effort but

I'm not sure piano*dad was even suggesting that we should necessarily do this; he was just massaging the data as we social scientists are wont to do. laugh

If we continue with data massaging, I'm fairly confident that the mean difference between chicks and dudes would not be statistically significant (although I am WAY too lazy to do the analysis myself!). So a purist could argue that it was a tie. wink

That's not right, Triryche...I have collected years of data that prove you can't prove anything with lots of data. In, fact, the more data you have, the more likely every answer will be correct, proving once again, you cannot prove something without not proving anything, so there.

If you would like to dis-prove me, I am willing to share that part of my data that proves my point.....

Thanks Monica. I was simply having some fun with numbers. Kathleen .....lighten up! :p

Actually, I'm far too lazy to put it all into a spread sheet. That way the distribution could be analyzed very easily. And incidentally, the Dudezrule entry should be discarded from every calculation. It's not part of the data.

Ah, yes, the double negative....

I have found, and have the data to prove it, that putting one's tongue in cheek just makes more room for the foot......

Kathleen .....lighten up!

Gosh, I thought with my happy faces and grins and other stuff that I had left a fairly "light" message. confused

I'm truly sorry if you thought it otherwise. frown

I meant it purely as personal observation and nothing more. Honest!

If you knew me, you would find that I don't have a competitive bone in my body. The only person I compete against is myself.

To prove, I'm still the same OLD person, I've composed a special limerick to commemorate the occasion.

From what I added up by hand, that -2400 was not counted in the chicks total.

Congrats on the win against us dudes. thumb

But this dude will put in a full month (except some vacation days) this September. laugh

Major work in this contest
But the effort was naught
the battle was fought
and chicks came out the best....

The major benefit of these fun contests is that it probably gets some of us to the piano bench when we otherwise wouldn't be there. I know that for myself, while I clocked small amounts of time, I probably wouldn't have played at all. But, in the back of my mind I'm thinking, "The Chicks need minutes!" So, even though I was out of town this weekend, worked weekdays, and had meetings or activities every night this week, I did sit down for short periods to play instead of going to bed. Sleep is over-rated, isn't it?

Good morning Chicks and Dudes,

Hey, terrific contest, everyone! Great fun, especially the down to the wire finish ! Chicks, you rock-- and Dudes, you gave us (me!) a real scare there at the end, prompting a marathon evening at the piano. smile Way to go, everyone!

gmm1, those were priceless posts!!

As for "truncating" data-- well I guess we could argue that without Ruth, Gehrig and Mantle the Yankees would not have won all those games but... they did! laugh So Kathleen, don't go anywhere, we need you!

I have a feeling the Dudes are going to come out strong in Sept, so, let's play on...

best to all,

Sophia
