To Fellow Sudnow students, I have a few questions. Let me add that I'm working on Misty, and his chords sound awesome....

1. Are you able to play his voicings straight from a fake book yet? For example, if I open up to a song in a fake book, are you able to right away play it in the Sudnow style? If so, how long did it take you to get there?

2. To what extent can you "play by ear?" By "play by ear" I mean that someone names a tune that you are familiar with, and you can bang it right out.

Thanks -

I think you are better off asking this on the Discuss away section of the Sudnow forum.

I think there is already some discussion of this on there in fact.

As best as I can tell all of us reading the ABF have been in the game no more than year which is hardly "seasoned"

Thanks, KS.

Its just that being a beginner, I haven't signed up for Sudnow's forum.

There are two sides to the Sudnow board. The free side and the pay side. Most of the forums on the board on on the free side, including the Discuss Away forum.

Can't say I'm "seasoned" because I only started the course the end of January. Until I see you on the Sudnow forum, I'll answer your question here.

Part of my practice time deals with reading from a fake book and voicing "on the fly". I play it very slowly. I do notice an improvement the more I do it. Been doing this after I voiced 6 of my own songs. The voicing of songs comes easy for me by following the rules that David gives.

I'm not after "playing by ear". My goal is to be able to use a fake book and play pretty much at the right tempo ... using appropriate fills.

Glad you're enjoying the Misty chords. They are rather addicting. Keep pounding those keys!

angelo yours might be a hard question to answer as the majority of "regulars" that are posting at the sudnow site are relative newbies (<1 year experience).

however from time to time one of the advanced students jumps in. take a look for the post from about a month ago from the guy who plays "cocktail lounge" professionally via the sudnow method.

angelo - After you get set up on the Sudnow site, you may want to check out the Question and Answer forum. The topic "Let's Get to Know One Another" is a good way to get acquainted with the other regulars. Plus, you can help us get acquainted with you! Hope to see you soon on the other side. ;\)
