#1033042 - 10/27/07 09:41 PM Do AB's get more or less piano time on the weekend?

The weekend, being Friday night thru Sunday night, is somewhat different from the hours worked during the week. Does this mean you have more or less time for your music on the weekends?

About how many hours do you get in over the weekend, compared to the work week? May I ask?

I definitely spend & have more time playing the piano. On the weekend, I'll usually spend about 5-6 hrs on the piano. On the weekdays, I'll be lucky if I can get 20 min in.

I'm a part-time teacher and mother of three boys, so the weekends are crazier than the weekdays for me. I usually work 9:30-2:15 or so, which means I get an hour on the piano before I go to work (that is truly heaven), and then a little time after work. During the weekends I might get a couple of hours if everyone is occupied, but all three of my kids take piano also, so when they're home, someone else is usually ahead of me in line!

Much more... During the week, I may play as little as 10 minutes a day and at most 45 minutes. On the weekend I try to play at least 2 hours a day.

On weekdays (95% of the time, sometimes work gets in the way) I play between 1 and 2 hours a day. I actually teach on Saturdays, so I don't have two days off on the weekend, but the flipside of that is I have more down time during the week than most people. So I usually am beat on Saturdays, and that is probably the day I get the least practice (30 minutes to an hour.) On Sundays, I am usually able to practice in a few different sittings, and often do lots of piano-related work away from the keyboard, so a lot of time is spent on piano on Sundays.

I practice for up to 3 hours each day during the week. An hour before work, most days an hour at lunch and usually an hour in the evenings. I find weekends vary. House work, social commitments and family obligations often leave less time but then there are those heavenly days that I have the house to myself and can literally spend the whole day (with breaks of course) on the bench.

On average, I get a bit less, especially if I have to work the weekend (I work every other weekend). Sundays are iffy but I can get a lot of practice time in after morning service on my off weekends. I got only an hour's practice today vs my usual 90 ~ 120 minutes because I went and tuned my Sunday school teacher's piano and that took a while (over a semitone flat and out of tune).

Much more time on the weekends. During the week I play 15 or 20 minutes in the morning before work and, at most, half an hour in the evenings, sometimes not at all. Weekends are a different story. I played several hours yesterday (Saturday) and plan to do the same today.

Weekends rule!

Less time on the weekends. I work part-time, so in the week I can usually fit in a couple of 20 minute sessions in between housework and cooking and whatever needs doing outside. But at the weekend hubby is around needing attention \:D , and sometimes I only manage to fit in 10-15 minutes. But if he says he wants to do some stuff on the internet I always encourage him enthusiastically ;\) .

I usually play 30-60 minutes per day on the weekdays. I actually play less on the weekends because my father's home during the day, and he also plays the piano(he's not practicing during this time, it's just some stupid psychological issue).

I aim for about an hour a day and that's usually what I do on weekends, but I've been getting in close to two hours a day Monday through Friday.

This is because I've been very lucky to gain access to a piano that's just a few minutes' drive from my office, so I pop out during the lunch hour, and play and unwind and relax -- and when I return to my office I'm refreshed and ready to tackle the second half of the workday. Playing piano really is great therapy for office stress! \:\)

Usually more, except when the Red Sox are in the playoffs.

I tend to practice anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour on week-days. I tend to practice more on weekends but it varies. I haven't practiced as much these past two weekends because of family visiting. My weekday practice is more focused e.g. practicing pieces and other exercises for the upcoming piano lesson. I tend to be less structured with my weekend practicing as I am not as pressed for time on the weekends as I am on weekdays. I therefore tend to devote more time to other pieces that I'm not currently learning during lessons and to experimenting with playing by ear and improvising.

I usually can spend more time practicing during the weekends. More or less about 2 - 3 hours Sat and Sunday (with breaks, of course)

That's mostly because my full time job ridiculous timetable. Getting home (Mon-Fri) at 22:00 pm or later with almost all the housework still to do is not the best evironment for consistent week days practice. With all, I manage to play for about an hour every day (23:30 - 00:30), sometimes a little bit more if I'm inspired. No panic for the neighbours, I own a Yamaha P-140 DP.

If I'm planning of getting out for the week end, then I try to practice some more time during labour days, mostly at lunch time.

I have less time on the weekends for practice. Reason... I have two young children and when they are home from school they are everywhere! \:\) Plus they tend to have friends over so at times there are 10-12 children running around my house and yard.

That is not to say that I don't play, I just don't practice. I love solitude when I practice. I get so focused on what I am doing that I can become quite a bear if interuppted! So I tend to practice while the kids are at school. On the weekends I play 'fun' stuff. I still play for and hour or more on weekends and still mostly play classical since that is my passion but I play the stuff that doesn't make me growl at everyone if I get intruppted. \:\)

Weekends are a crapshoot for me due to the social calendar and/or the honeydew list.

Time wise about the same, but quality wise I do better during the week when everyone is at work or school...

I usually manage 2-3 hours in the evenings through the week and I always intend to get in 4-6 hours on Saturday and Sunday but it seldom works out that way. I have a chronic condition (pulmonary hypertension) that makes me tire quickly, my work week is exhausting so a lot of the weekend gets consumed simply recuperating.

You are all so resourceful in finding time to practice, it's obvious you take practicing seriously, and have a passion for piano! If anything, you would like to be at your pianos even more than you are!

I'm so pleased to have so many responses to my question.

No one seems to think of "slacking" as an option.

Cheers to you!

Betty, one thing I've found helpful as I drive an hour each way to the office twice a week, is to "practice" my RH on the console between the seats in my station wagon, particularly fingers 4 and 5 while holding down 1-3. Also this is a good time to practice lifts for 4.

In addition to muscular exercise, it is also a test in working the fingers while keeping stress in check. It does not disturb driving along a long stretch of highway in the least, and seems a productive way to pass otherwise dull time.

The LH does not get equal time, unfortunately.
