I'm just starting to work on Grieg's Nocturne Op. 54, No. 4 and would welcome one or more practice partners.

Anyone interested in learning this piece?

The score that I'm using is from my CD Sheet Music - Sonatinas and Easy Classics .

There is also an edition in the Schirmer Catalogue .

A free public domain version is also available for download from The Sheet Music Archive .

Hi Linda,

I'm listening to this now and have downloaded the sheet music. I think many parts of it are too hard for me but I love this idea of "practice partners!!!"

Ouch! The opposing rythym in measure 5 would trip me up every time. Chopsticks anyone? ;\)

Let me tinker with it-- I just downloaded it from sheetmusicarchive.

I've never played any Grieg and feel like it's a gaping hole in my, choke, "repertoire."

I'll let you know.

Hi, Sandy, Phil, and Nina:

Thanks for posting!

I spent some time reviewing the piece last night. The 2 against 3 8th notes don't appear to be too bad, and the rhythmic pattern is repeated throughout the piece, which makes it easier. At first blush, I think my biggest challenges are going to be the trills and the pedaling - but we'll see what other dangers lurk once I really start getting into the piece.

Nina[/b] - I hope you'll join me on this adventure! \:\)

Sandy and Phil[/b] - perhaps the two of you could work on a piece together, but maybe not chopsticks??? \:D

Best wishes to all . . . Linda

I just pulled this out of my repertoire this morning to rememorize it for a recital in a couple weeks. Then I go on PW and see that others are playing it, too!

It's a great piece. And yes, the opposing rhythms are quite tricky at first. The middle section with those two note chords in the right hand - that's tricky, too. But after a while it gets much easier, I promise!

Thanks for the encouragement, Sam!

Yes, that middle section does look tricky. I'm not quite sure of how I'm gong to pedal it. My score is well marked for una corda and tres corde, but the damper pedal is another story. Afraid that my first inclination would be to over use the damper pedal in lieu of good technique.

Good luck with your upcoming recital. \:\) \:\) Please let me know how it goes!!!

. . . Linda

Oh, I forgot about the una corda pedal. Thanks! \:\)

The recital is actually one of my teacher's student recitals. I'm ending the recital with Grieg's Concerto (1st movement), and she called today to inform me that I should also be preparing an encore... \:D

Way to go, Sam!

I wonder if anyone will ever ask me to play an encore.

I will on Saturday night. That is, if you're attending the DC piano party.

Anyhow, the Nocturne will be my encore, I think...

Ah, markb, you're such a sweetie! :3hearts:

I'll be there, but I don't think the Nocturne will be ready in time. Maybe Sam will come and play it for us!

What will you be playing on Saturday? I'll probably probably play a couple of my recent exam pieces.

Sam - have fun with the recital. Please let me know if you stumble upon any new insights as you brush off the Nocturne. Thanks!

I'll be playing the buffoon. Typecast, you know.

Actually, I like to play my cards close to my chest. The intrigue and anticipation will far exceed the actual event. I also reserve the right to totally chicken out, cross my arms, pout, and refuse to play. (Don't tell anyone, but I'm really going just for the food.)

Alright, I'll give you a hint. *If* I play something, it won't be Clementi.

Oh come on. You know you love Clementi. Just give in to it Mark. The dark side calls....

I don't think I should be anyone's practice partner. The last time I was, it was Mark and Clementi, and he gave up on it! I suck as a practice partner. \:\(

Now, Shelly, my total failure with Clementi had nothing, well maybe a little, or possibly something, yes, everything to do with you! You let me down. It's all your fault that I decided to drop Clementi. I really want to thank you for sending me into therapy as a Clementiphobe.

Clementiphobes of the world unite! I'm actually glad to be done with it, I don't miss it! But I doubt I'll be on anyone's list of practice partners.

I would have you as a practice partner, SAS, but you are too advanced for me. Also there's that little matter of the butt kickin you gave me in our last contest...

Getting things back on track, here, is anyone interested in learning the Grieg Nocturne? Nina?
