Has anyone used Gary Ewer's Easy Music Theory course? Any comments are appreciated as I would just as soon not be a guinea pig. A link to his site is below.

Many thanks,
Steve

If I were into classical music, I would probably drop the $88 for the course. If nothing else, it provides a different perspective on things and I'm sure that I'd get my $88 worth out of it.

But then, I would have $88 to spare. If you don't, then you probably should only do it if you aren't able to understand the concepts from his table of contents in your current curriculum.

Thanks Bob. I was hoping someone out there in "piano land" has already given this a try.

If anyone has a better idea regarding learing theory I would be most grateful.

I actually found this course while doing a google search for "time signiture" which has been giving me problems. Life would be so much easier if everything was in 4/4 time.

Regards to the list,
Steve

Wow, it almost looks like the whole course is already on the site for free except for the videos.

I haven't taken the course but Gary Ewer is one of the professors who teaches theory at the university where I work and has an execellent reputation. He teaches foundation and 1st year ear training and theory.

Peter and Sandy, many thanks.

Sandy, it is good to see you know of him and he has a good reputation. I may give this course a try.

To me it all looks like stuff you could learn from free info on the web and from an evening at your local public library.

That's true of about 99% of all university lecture courses.

Kreisler, I have a question for you. I'm currently learning to play by ear and I think I'm gaining a fairly decent foundation in theory while I'm at it. Shouldn't it be true the other way 'round. If somebody has a solid understanding of theory, shouldn't they be able to play a melody and know the chords to match as they play it?
