PLEASE DO NOT POST IN THIS THREAD! USE THE DISCUSSION THREAD.[/b] I am delighted to introduce our eighth quarterly Adult Beginners' Forum Recital. So, pull up a chair and have a listen. I would like to take this opportunity to ask the audience to please refrain from commentary in this recital room. A separate room has been provided for the purposes of intermezzo discussion. Please take any and all comments to the General Discussion Room and all critical discussion to the Critical Discussion Room .Thank you. Each participant in the recital has provided a direct link to the original recording. For the convenience of forum members, mahlzeit's program has normalized the files for consistent volume and standardized the ID3 tags in a collection of six zip files. This makes it easier to create personal CDs and playlists. These zip files (along with past recitals) have been posted at the following URL: http://www.esnips.com/web/PWRecitals If you get an error message about the bandwidth limit having been reached, the Zip files have also been uploaded to these other locations you can try: http://www.esnips.com/web/copper2-PWRecitals http://www.esnips.com/web/copper3-PWRecitals http://www.esnips.com/web/copper4-PWRecitals or here: www.sailwave.com/music/Recital_8_zip_1.zip www.sailwave.com/music/Recital_8_zip_2.zip www.sailwave.com/music/Recital_8_zip_3.zip www.sailwave.com/music/Recital_8_zip_4.zip www.sailwave.com/music/Recital_8_zip_5.zip www.sailwave.com/music/Recital_8_zip_6.zip or here: Recital 8 zip file 1 Recital 8 zip file 2 Recital 8 zip file 3 Recital 8 zip file 4 Recital 8 zip file 5 Recital 8 zip file 6 or here on mediafire: Zip 1 Zip 2 Zip 3 Zip 4 Zip 5 Zip 6 Let me express my greatest thanks to four very special people: mr_super-hunky for coming up with the idea of our online recitals, which have proven to be more successful than any of us ever dreamed; Bob Muir for working out the technical details of pulling together the recital and doing so tirelessly for the first six, count 'em, six, recitals; Copper for hosting the zip files and trouble-shooting my initial efforts at creating them; and last but not least, mahlzeit for writing the absolutely fantastic web-based recital program that we are using for the first time. THANK YOU MAHLZEIT!!![/b]

It is a bit slow, but I am probably not going to spend much time to get it to the blazing speed anyway. My guide says it should be played in under a minute, and I clocked in at 0:58, so at least I am within the ballpark. Now, Ovchinnikov's rendition is just 0:45, but, however much I'd like to be confused with him, that's not likely to happen :-) |

Audacity. | | Critical feedback wanted: | Yes | | Additional info: | I'm really happy to play for you this lovely, romantic waltz, Sad Gardens (Tristes Jardines) by José de Jesús Martínez (1888-1916 Mexico). Even though it's called Sad Gardens, there is a definite feeling of playfulness and joy to this wonderful piece of music. It's in three sections, plus a short Introduction and final Coda. The first section is marked Capricious. The second section is a Scherzando, playful, and the third is a Trio marked Dolce, sweet. This section comes to a great climax at a big f minor chord, underscored with a delicate and fast run. Sad Gardens ends peacefully with two quiet arpeggios. This is my "hommage" to a composer, dead too young and forgotten too soon, who deserves to be heard and loved. Here's the public domain score: http://www.mediafire.com/?dxhny0ntiwp |

I'm pretty pleased with the song. I've a few minor errors like once or twice forgot to pedal and a few uneven strokes but I can live with that. I decided to leave the little improvisation at the end instead of cutting it off although it sounds nicer in my head while playing it then in does on the recording. |

The great thing about these recitals for someone like me that never plays for anyone else is that having to sit down and record really makes you take a serious look at how you are playing. I'm forced to sit and listen to myself and accept how harsh my sound is, how I'm too rushed etc. Anyway... lot's of mistakes and I promise, they are ALL mine. |

Philip Keveren | | Source of music: | sheet music (with a few minor alterations, some intentional, some not-so-intentional) | | Instrument used: | Roland RD-700SX | | Recording method: | keyboard line out to laptop mic in (mono, sorry) to Audacity | | Critical feedback wanted: | Yes | | Additional info: | My first recording of "new" music! (i.e. something I didn't first learn almost 20 years ago =p ) This piece is simple in terms of having not so many notes, but the bareness made it a real challenge for improving touch. The first few (ok, more than a few) recordings sounded extremely "bangy", though the music box in my head didn't hear it this way live. It took adjusting both my playing and the keyboard settings to make listening to the recording bearable. So, still a work in progress; I also need to confess to one splice in the last two pages of music. The original song by Twila Paris is incredibly beautiful -- I hope some of that comes through in this performance of Philip Keveren's piano arrangement. |

(It also appeared to be about a conquistador searching for the Tree of Immortality, and some guy traveling through space in a big bubble. It was a pretty weird movie. But the soundtrack is outstanding.) This piece captures well a brooding atmosphere of futility and loss, underscored by enduring love. |

It didn't help that I lost one of my c's toward the end. John Field (1783-1837) was an Irish composer who spent most of his adult life in Russia where he is wel remembered.
He was the "inventor" of the nocturne and thus of some influence on Chopin who sometimes used Field's noctures as teaching pieces. |

So this is "as good as it gets"!
As for the musical and technical aspects of playing this piece, I am not taking lessons now, so I am not educated on how best to play the piece. Your comments on subtleties of interpretation, techniques etc are welcome in the critical discussion thread. |

I had asked him if there was a meaning behind the title of this piece and he says "Actually, there is. It's pretty basic, I just felt that I needed to breathe sort of in a flowing mannor to let the song also breathe. Especially toward the middle of the song where the RH has to be so flexible. Thus....the song took that as a name." (So thank you Greg)
This piece also means alot to me because when I was learning this piece, my dog whom was precious to me was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. Within a few weeks she had passed away. My heart still breaks when I think about it. I was planning to sit out on this recital because for many weeks, I had a hard time concentrating due to my depression and hardly practised the piano. Anyways, I manage to pick myself up and decided to dedicate this piece to my dog "Cocoa". So this is the outcome. |

S. Bach | | Source of music: | Schirmer's Library of Musical Classics Vol. 20 | | Instrument used: | 1893 Knabe grand | | Recording method: | Boom-mounted large condenser CAD-M177 studio microphones Analog mixer/pre-amps Cruddy USB sound interface - now the weak link in my recording chain. | | Critical feedback wanted: | Yes | | Additional info: | "The Scherzo likewise [along with the Burlesca] corresponds to its title, which signifies jocular and romping merriment" (F.K. Griepenkerl, Sr., from the forward).
A short, fun piece... These are great work for the fingers and quite fun to play. Now to (attempt to) learn the rest of Partita No. 3
I spent some time and money on the recording setup since our last get-together (primarily for the Preludes recital). The built-in "microphone" jack has been bypassed in favor of an inexpensive USB device that barely handles 44.1kHz, and that only on "very high latency" setting. Any further improvement will require a different computer. The studio-grade American-made microphones/boom stands are an addition with which I am very pleased and do make a huge difference covering the entire audible spectrum. Tweaking the boom placement and positioning for different audio textures adds a new element of interest |

I know there is a lot I need to improve, but for now it feels like a great accomplishment.
About this song (taken from Wikipedia) :
I Remember Clifford is the name of a jazz threnody written by jazz tenor saxophone player Benny Golson in memory of Clifford Brown, the influential and highly-rated jazz trumpeter who died in an auto accident when he was only 25 years old; he and Golson had done a stint in Lionel Hampton's band together. |

I can't seem to read all those arpeggios in the LH fast enough, so I had to memorize the piece. At least I'll have something I can sit down and play without sheet music! |

The soundtrack to that movie was composed by James Horner. The piece I performed is a variation on the main theme by another composer, I've never heard of before. I actually liked it better than the original, and so I decided to memorize that one instead. I'm a big "classical" sound track fan, and will be posting many more from various movies in the future. |

Fixed one or two sloppy mistakes in Anvil Studio. Exported to WAV using Cantabile Lite with TruePianos VSTi (demo version) and the Ambience reverb plugin (also demo version). Tweaked WAV file in Cool Edit Pro. Made MP3 with WinLame. | | Critical feedback wanted: | Yes | | Additional info: | Usually my compositions and improvisations are in AABA form, but this time I simply glued together three different parts, all in the key of G (or Em, its relative minor). I probably should have developed these three themes more because the recording is a bit on the short side, though it was already hard enough to play as is. Some bits sound vaguely familiar, so I might have used them before (or "borrowed" them, heh heh). |
