It is a bit slow, but I am probably not going to spend much time to get it to the blazing speed anyway. My guide says it should be played in under a minute, and I clocked in at 0:58, so at least I am within the ballpark.
Now, Ovchinnikov's rendition is just 0:45, but, however much I'd like to be confused with him, that's not likely to happen :-) |

Audacity. | | Critical feedback wanted: | Yes | | Additional info: | I'm really happy to play for you this lovely, romantic waltz, Sad Gardens (Tristes Jardines) by José de Jesús Martínez (1888-1916 Mexico). Even though it's called Sad Gardens, there is a definite feeling of playfulness and joy to this wonderful piece of music. It's in three sections, plus a short Introduction and final Coda. The first section is marked Capricious. The second section is a Scherzando, playful, and the third is a Trio marked Dolce, sweet. This section comes to a great climax at a big f minor chord, underscored with a delicate and fast run. Sad Gardens ends peacefully with two quiet arpeggios. This is my "hommage" to a composer, dead too young and forgotten too soon, who deserves to be heard and loved. Here's the public domain score:

I'm pretty pleased with the song. I've a few minor errors like once or twice forgot to pedal and a few uneven strokes but I can live with that. I decided to leave the little improvisation at the end instead of cutting it off although it sounds nicer in my head while playing it then in does on the recording. |

The first few (ok, more than a few) recordings sounded extremely "bangy", though the music box in my head didn't hear it this way live. It took adjusting both my playing and the keyboard settings to make listening to the recording bearable. So, still a work in progress; I also need to confess to one splice in the last two pages of music. The original song by Twila Paris is incredibly beautiful -- I hope some of that comes through in this performance of Philip Keveren's piano arrangement. |

He was the "inventor" of the nocturne and thus of some influence on Chopin who sometimes used Field's noctures as teaching pieces. |

Subsequently I had to be out of town unexpectedly. Then just yesterday, the mp3 player died a firmware death. So I don't have a chance to record a better version, which was always my intent. So this is "as good as it gets"!
As for the musical and technical aspects of playing this piece, I am not taking lessons now, so I am not educated on how best to play the piece. Your comments on subtleties of interpretation, techniques etc are welcome in the critical discussion thread. |

I had asked him if there was a meaning behind the title of this piece and he says "Actually, there is. It's pretty basic, I just felt that I needed to breathe sort of in a flowing mannor to let the song also breathe. Especially toward the middle of the song where the RH has to be so flexible. Thus....the song took that as a name." (So thank you Greg)
This piece also means alot to me because when I was learning this piece, my dog whom was precious to me was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. Within a few weeks she had passed away. My heart still breaks when I think about it. I was planning to sit out on this recital because for many weeks, I had a hard time concentrating due to my depression and hardly practised the piano. Anyways, I manage to pick myself up and decided to dedicate this piece to my dog "Cocoa". So this is the outcome. |

A short, fun piece... These are great work for the fingers and quite fun to play. Now to (attempt to) learn the rest of Partita No. 3 
I spent some time and money on the recording setup since our last get-together (primarily for the Preludes recital). The built-in "microphone" jack has been bypassed in favor of an inexpensive USB device that barely handles 44.1kHz, and that only on "very high latency" setting. Any further improvement will require a different computer. The studio-grade American-made microphones/boom stands are an addition with which I am very pleased and do make a huge difference covering the entire audible spectrum. Tweaking the boom placement and positioning for different audio textures adds a new element of interest |

I know there is a lot I need to improve, but for now it feels like a great accomplishment.

The soundtrack to that movie was composed by James Horner. The piece I performed is a variation on the main theme by another composer, I've never heard of before. I actually liked it better than the original, and so I decided to memorize that one instead.
I'm a big "classical" sound track fan, and will be posting many more from various movies in the future. |
