PLEASE DO NOT POST IN THIS THREAD! USE THE DISCUSSION THREAD(S).[/b]

I am delighted to introduce our 11th quarterly Adult Beginners' Forum Recital. So, pull up a chair and have a listen.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask the audience to please refrain from commentary in this recital room.

A separate room has been provided for the purposes of intermezzo discussion. Please take any and all comments to the General Discussion Room and all critical discussion to the Critical Discussion Room .

Thank you.

A template has been created for those who wish to provide individualized feedback:

In addition to the zip files linked below, mahlzeit has added a feature to his program that creates an online streaming player. Just click on the link to hear all the recital pieces without having to download the zip files:

Online Streaming Player

For the convenience of forum members, mahlzeit's program has normalized the files for consistent volume and standardized the ID3 tags in a collection of zip files. This makes it easier to create personal CDs and playlists.

These zip files have been posted at the following URLs:

Recital 11 Zip File 1
Recital 11 Zip File 2
Recital 11 Zip File 3
Recital 11 Zip File 4
Recital 11 Zip File 5
Recital 11 Zip File 6
Recital 11 Zip File 7

The zip files, along with past recitals, have also been uploaded to:

http://www.esnips.com/web/PWRecitals

Let me express my greatest thanks to five very special people: mr_super-hunky for coming up with the idea of our online recitals, which have proven to be more successful than any of us ever dreamed; Bob Muir for working out the technical details of pulling together the recital and doing so tirelessly for the first six, count 'em, six, recitals; LaValse for hosting the zip files and recital software on his server; Copper for also hosting the zip files and trouble-shooting help; and last but not least, mahlzeit for writing the absolutely fantastic web-based recital program that we are using. THANK YOU MAHLZEIT!!! :2hearts:

AGAIN: DO NOT REPLY OR POST ON THIS THREAD!![/b]

Composer:Ludwig van Beethoven
Duration:05:40
Source of music:Sheet music
Instrument used:Kawai CN 21 / TruePianos
Recording method:Recorded with Audacity using TruePianos 40-day trial computer piano synthesizer.
Critical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:As in all my performances, it's far from good to my ears. Honestly, it's sloppy, with at least three very bad slips. I went on a summer break with no piano there and then remembered that recital is coming. I went home for two days to record the piece, but after three weeks break I felt I no longer can play it as I could before. My fingers didn't want to cooperate. It's the last take from these two days, perhaps the best one. Not the best I ever did though. I hope it's not that bad after all, and... well, here it is - enjoy! Critical feedback seriously wanted.

Composer:Ludovico Einaudi
Duration:05:56
Source of music:Una Mattina sheet music collection
Instrument used:Mason & Hamlin A
Recording method:Zoom H4, normalized through Audacity
Critical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:The title of this piece translates, I think, into "White Clouds," or possibly "Female White Clouds" or "White Clouds Woman" (depending on which online translator you use), which makes a lot less sense. Learning this piece was one of those all-too-rare transcendent piano experiences for me; it came to me much more quickly than most pieces do.

Title of piece:Whistling Away the Dark
Composer:Mercer - Mancini
Duration:04:13
Source of music:Improvised from vocal
Instrument used:Steinway acoustic
Recording method:Pair of Rode NT5 mics with Zoom H4 as phantom power
Critical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:This is my first serious attempt at improvising. When I was a young teenager, I fooled around with "Blue moon" and "Heart and Soul" but never to the extent of creating a complete song. Since improvising is new for me, entering it in a recital seems to be the natural place to reveal my effort.

I hope you enjoy.

WHISTLING AWAY THE DARK

From "Darling Lili"
(Johnny Mercer / Henry Mancini)

Often I think this sad old world is whistling in the dark.
Just like a child, who, late from school walks bravely
Home through the park.

To keep their spirits soaring and keep the night at bay.
Neither quite knowing which way they are going, they sing
The shadows away,

Often I think my poor old heart has given up for good.
And then I see a brand new face, I glimpse some new
Neighborhood.

So walk me back home, my darling, tell me dreams really come true.
Whistling... whistling... here in the dark with you.

Often I think my poor old heart has given up for good.
And then I see a brand new face, I glimpse some new
Neighborhood.

So walk me back home, my darling, tell me dreams really come true.
Whistling... whistling... here in the dark with you.

Title of piece:Tarantella
Composer:Albert Pieczonka
Duration:02:35
Source of music:Recital Winners Volume 1, compiled by Carole L. Bigler and Valery Lloyd-Watts, performed from memory
Instrument used:my teacher’s Mason & Hamlin BB
Recording method:Zoom H4 placed behind my right shoulder
Critical feedback wanted:No
Additional info:This piece is the absolute most fun to play of any I have learned. Flying fingers all the way through, gigantic 4-octave scale prestissimo at the end, it is great! It is so fun to play fast. And it is really impressive to watch somebody play it.

I first saw this piece performed by one of my teacher’s better middle-school students (perfectly, by the way). Last fall I asked my teacher if I could learn it, because it looked like fun. She hmmmed a while and said “the middle section is really hard” but she let me do it. The first assignment was to learn just the melody (first note of each triplet) of the middle section, which needs to be brought out. There are tricky rhythms, right hand octave jumps back and forth at high speed (at 0:18-0:35 and 1:44-2:01), lots of dynamic contrast, and plenty of other fun stuff.

I learned this piece for my Guild audition in May. It was probably the hardest of the 10 pieces I did, and I know it needs to be better. My teacher says I need another year of familiarity with it. I recorded all my pieces soon after the audition, and just now listened to the recording. I was surprised at how good it actually sounds. I know there are sloppy spots and a couple of big memory problems in this recording, and of course I messed up the end of the big scale, but I am pleased at how most of it sounds. So here you go—sort of premature but I hope you enjoy it.

Composer:Mr super-hunky
Duration:05:28
Source of music:Original composition
Instrument used:Roland KR-7
Recording method:Direct to pc
Critical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:Ok, after talking about the melodies in my head for years now, I finally, for the very first time composed a 100% all original composition to give you a *sneek peek* at what is inside my wacky brain.

While this is not a technically demanding piece, there are a few tricky sections that took me a while to get down; especially the 10 note spreads throughout the piece.

I did everything possible when composing this piece to represent the major musical influences of the composers/artists I follow.

You will hear many 10 note spreads throughout the piece such as used in some of David Lanzs scores. (Cristoforis dream). You will hear numerous minor note progressions like Ludovico Einaudi does as well as hearing a musical journey with many different stages and different melodies/ meanings such as done by Nobuo Uematsu in his final Fantasy piano collections.

I wanted this piece to sound like a musical journey that could even be used as a movie soundtrack in places in which the melodies would follow along with the story line.

I am only scratching the surface with trying to get these thoughts/melodies in my mind transferred onto the keys forming a complete piece. With practice and more time, I hope to continue with these original compositions as it was so much fun to do as well as extremelly rewarding when the piece is finally finished. I really DO love doing this!.

Additional info:A shortened and simplified, but still very nicely arranged, version of one of the most beautiful of all classical works - probably the best of a number of excellent study pieces in Alfred 2 - the theme from the Etude was used as the basis for the popular song "No Other Love", a big hit in 1950 for singer Jo Stafford, a very talented lady with a lovely "smokey" alto - at the risk of distracting from my own recorded performance I think you'll enjoy hearing her simple, but elegant, rendition of this absolutely gorgeous adaptation of a classical masterpiece into a beautiful popular song, one with surprisingly sophisticated lyrics to match Chopin's wonderful melody - to do so please click on the YouTube link I provided above - very sadly, they don't write, or sing, songs like this anymore - hope you enjoy both of our versions, and thanks for listening! Regards, JF

Instrument used:Young Chang acoustic grand
Recording method:Metro
Critical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:This is a song inspired by a recent painting I did. I sang and played together but did one additional track of harmony. Unfortunately there is a little clipping in the recording. Here are the lyrics.

If I could have but one place to live
a house at the end of the world.
And if I could have but one heart to give
that would be to you sweet girl.

And when all the world’s in darkness
but for one small patch of blue.
That’s where I shall build my house
and live with the love of you.

If I could have but one sound to hear
a sigh at the end of time.
If I could share but just one dream
that would be yours with mine.

And in the house of sighs and dreams
under that small patch of blue
at the end of the world when all has been said
I will dream in silence with you.

Source of music:Sheet music. PM me for a copy.

Recording method:Line out to computer line in, Audacity.
Critical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:In his short, difficult life, Vasily Kalinnikov (1866-1901) wrote only seven pieces for the piano. His Moderato in e flat minor is a dark, moody, lovely piece. The chief difficulty with this piece is that the melody is played by the fifth finger of the right hand, while the other fingers of the right hand play the accompaniment. This is a great piece for teaching the fingers to sing and to learn to play the spaces between the notes, where the very soul of the music lies. Hope you like it.

Additional info:I just love Beethoven and I love this piece. It tells many stories and has both joyful/mischievous and melancholy moments. Besides, it shows that Beethoven's music is not always grave as a lot of people seem to assume. This is just one example that he was funny and playful as well and an excellent pianist, too.

Lunch.... since I returned from my holiday today, I had a ciabatta sandwich with mozzarella, tomato and basil at the airport and some pasta with red pesto when I finally was home.

I'm finding that my current recording setup doesn't get the highest notes at volume. Maybe it's time for a new recording setup?

Incidently, I played piano in church one Sunday this summer. I had never done it before. In part, it was the kind feedback I got from the last two recitals that encouraged me to go through with it when I got the opportunity. So, thanks to you all, and I'm looking forward to hearing some more great music.

Additional info:Oh, lunch! Maybe that's the problem! No lunch!

I've been playing this for several years. I first heard rags through the Western swing/old-time traditions, so they're not played straight in my recollection. I found this in a fiddle/lead sheet book, so I had to make up my own bass, which took several months. Since most of the rags I had played were Joplin, my bass has Joplin influences. Later I downloaded the original Botsford Black and White from the Lester Levy Collection. This version bears a family resemblance to that one \:\) , and I like my bass better \:D .

I will have to admit this is the first time I've been disappointed in my recital submission, but there's just been too much going on at work. Oh well, as we say \:D

I am really looking forward to the other rags submitted for this recital - ragtime forever!

Additional info:I found this very tricky to learn at first because its almost entirely made up of triplets in the left hand, but it proved to be a great practice in developing this rhythm. A few errors have slipped in to this recording and the timing is off in several places, but on the whole I'm quite pleased as I managed to record it in a single take (the 3rd attempt, due to Audacity crashing) and I only finished learning it a short while ago. With a little more time I'm sure I can polish it up to more of a performance standard, but this will have to do for this recital.

For lunch, I had a pasty.

Additional info:I understand this is a practice piece, not a performance piece. Still, for me it represents one step in the long journey of learning piano, and a critical evaluation by members of Piano World would be appreciated. Personally I don't think I play it very smoothly, especially the third movement, but in the recording I am trying to play as fast as I accurately can.

This is the very first thing I played after I sat down. There was more, but the rest of the recording had too much talking in it so I kept only this part.

Additional info:This piece is in a book put out by Alfred publishing called Burgmuller, Czerny and Hanon - 32 Piano Studies Selected for Technique and Musicality. Basically, you work on some Czerny & Hanon excercises that lead to a Burgmuller piece employing some of those techniques. I really enjoy it and it is supplmenting my Alfred Adult Book 2, which is not the most exciting in the world. Anyway, I hope the variations in dynamics came through. I promise I really played this well for my teacher this past week, but the red dot was battling tough this time. Thanks. GregF

I did play this at a live recital, and managed to get through it with only one wobble - and I was pretty pleased - low expectations and all that. There is hope. I've tried many variations but nothing really strikes me like just sticking to the main theme and that is a fairly brief theme. Additional info:This piece is definitely a work in progress for me. I just recently memorized the notes
and haven't spent much time on polishing. Unless I'm able to sumbit a better recording before the
recital deadline, this recording contains a few wrong notes and a couple places
where I had to stop myself & start over. It is what it is...my playing with flaws & all.
For better or for worse, it has always been my habit to try to learn to play pieces that are more technically advanced than my capabilities. An unconventional approach, for sure.

They both entail excitement, patience, and fear. This piece is about the patience, 9 months for the birth, and who knows how long for the adoption. It takes me back to the birth of my long awaited son, whom we seemed to wait our whole lives for. He is the one who makes us a family.

Duration:02:21
Source of music:play-by-ear
Instrument used:Kawai CE200 digital.
Recording method:Phone-out of digital to line-in of laptop. Recorded with Mp3 Wave Editor freeware.
Critical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:This is another one of my Canto-pop songs. \:\) "Shanghai Tan" is commonly known as "the Bund" in English. ("Tan" means beach or strand - you thought it's the latest Olympic suntan fashion, eh? \:\) ) It's the famous river promenade in Shanghai. The song was written for a prime time TV soap opera of the same name. It was produced in Hong Kong in 1980 and the song has become a "classic". The show was set in the 1920s during the fading glory days of Shanghai. It's about passion, betrayal, crime, decadence - the "stuff" of soap opera. \:\) As an aside, Chow Yun Fat of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" fame starred in the show. I don't think he'd acquired international fame at that time.

This is the first time I really wish my digital (or may be the computer sound card) can capture and/or produce a better sound. The timbre of the recording is very tin-ny, and cannot express the drama that I was hoping for.

Finally, I am tempted to thank those who nudged me about submitting to this recital. You know who you *all* are! But on second thought, I don't want to encourage such behavior in the future, so I am withholding my thanks after all! ;\)

I had Palak Paneer (Indian) for lunch. Yummy.

Additional info:This is what happens if you procrastinate till the last minute. Since I didn't have any recital piece ready I decided that if I just play something easy, it'll be OK. Well, it's all wrong. My new laptop had difficulty connecting to the interface, there was a ground loop somewhere, one of the channels connectors broke (EMU0202 interface has XLR connector on one channel - that's the one that broke, and RCA on another, weird, isn't it?) - so I had to record mono; to add insult to injury, when I listened to what I recorded, I heard that my tempo floated from andante to allegretto and back :-( Now, that's new: consider it a "romanticized Mozart" or "rubatized Mozart." Still, this is a lovely easy sonata, one of the best proofs of Mozart's genius.

I know this recording isn't perfect. The main problem with this piece is that I do not play very evenly at high speeds and so it loses its waltz feel. I'd appreciate any tips on how I might be able to improve this. It is also well over one minute long!

Additional info:This piece, though easy to learn and commit to memory, has been the most technical piece I have tried. It is still not quite where I want it as far as accuracy and the technique will come as I gain more experience. My teacher and I could not find a definitive original solo score (originally written for four hands) so I took some liberties and combined aspects I liked from each of the scores I did find to come up with a few mostly unnoticeable variations. I know it's not a perfect performance and some parts are a bit choppy, but my goal since coming aboard here has become to submit for each recital. This was especially difficult since the last day to submit has been my first day off work for most of the two week submission period. Enjoy.

Source of music:World's Greatest Melodies for Piano, Hinson Ed.
Instrument used:Estonia L190
Recording method:Zoom H2, 10 inches above Estonia decal on soundboard. 44khz/16b WAV, Med Mic Gain, no ACG.
Critical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:Plan A was Bethena; not ready. Plan B was Bach Invention; sprained fingers curtailed practice time. So this is Plan C. I've played it for a while now, so I did this in only a few takes. Need to return the sprained finger to a splint and lay off piano for a few days!

Title of piece:Träumerei
Composer:Robert Schumann
Duration:02:29
Source of music:Sheet music
Instrument used:Casio Privia PX-800
Recording method:Digital to PC (bad cable = poor quality sound)
Critical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:Träumerei is a very beautiful piece which I learned to play a few months ago and decided to give it a try at recording it for the recital. Too bad my connecting cable is in bad shape and I couldn't get a quality sound out of the recording.
