It's the last take from these two days, perhaps the best one. Not the best I ever did though. I hope it's not that bad after all, and... well, here it is - enjoy! Flying fingers all the way through, gigantic 4-octave scale prestissimo at the end, it is great! It is so fun to play fast. And it is really impressive to watch somebody play it.
I first saw this piece performed by one of my teacher’s better middle-school students (perfectly, by the way). Last fall I asked my teacher if I could learn it, because it looked like fun. She hmmmed a while and said “the middle section is really hard” but she let me do it. The first assignment was to learn just the melody (first note of each triplet) of the middle section, which needs to be brought out. There are tricky rhythms, right hand octave jumps back and forth at high speed (at 0:18-0:35 and 1:44-2:01), lots of dynamic contrast, and plenty of other fun stuff.
I learned this piece for my Guild audition in May. It was probably the hardest of the 10 pieces I did, and I know it needs to be better. My teacher says I need another year of familiarity with it. I recorded all my pieces soon after the audition, and just now listened to the recording. I was surprised at how good it actually sounds. I know there are sloppy spots and a couple of big memory problems in this recording, and of course I messed up the end of the big scale, but I am pleased at how most of it sounds. So here you go—sort of premature but I hope you enjoy it. |

While this is not a technically demanding piece, there are a few tricky sections that took me a while to get down; especially the 10 note spreads throughout the piece.
I did everything possible when composing this piece to represent the major musical influences of the composers/artists I follow.
You will hear many 10 note spreads throughout the piece such as used in some of David Lanzs scores. (Cristoforis dream). You will hear numerous minor note progressions like Ludovico Einaudi does as well as hearing a musical journey with many different stages and different melodies/ meanings such as done by Nobuo Uematsu in his final Fantasy piano collections.
I wanted this piece to sound like a musical journey that could even be used as a movie soundtrack in places in which the melodies would follow along with the story line.
I am only scratching the surface with trying to get these thoughts/melodies in my mind transferred onto the keys forming a complete piece. With practice and more time, I hope to continue with these original compositions as it was so much fun to do as well as extremelly rewarding when the piece is finally finished. I really DO love doing this!. |

His Moderato in e flat minor is a dark, moody, lovely piece. The chief difficulty with this piece is that the melody is played by the fifth finger of the right hand, while the other fingers of the right hand play the accompaniment. This is a great piece for teaching the fingers to sing and to learn to play the spaces between the notes, where the very soul of the music lies. Hope you like it. |
