It's Fun to Play the Piano ... Please Pass It On!
hi all, I just discovered this forum and I'm really happy about it. Let me introduce myself briefly (hear!hear! how boring!)
I'm italian. I'm 40. I'm married with 2 kids. I'm a researcher in computer science.
This year (few months ago) I started taking piano lessons as an absolute beginner. When I was a kid I strongly refused even to try to study piano. My problem was that I was a quite smart kid, very good at school and in maths, and not used to try something that I was not immediately able to perform well. So I was afraid by piano.
Now I'm big enough. I have accepted that the best things in life are those that need exercise and/or efforts to be accomplished. And I'm not (so) ashamed by my failures. Besides, since now I'm a big boy (with the heart of a child, but do not tell this around) weighting around 120Kg, there will be no one able to force me to public performances at the end of the year.... :-)
I decided to give piano a try since I secretely wanted to play for years. I really enjoy the piano sound. Two years ago my elder son studied for one year and he was good, but he did not like it enough so he left: the side effect was the we had a piano (I was too shy to buy a piano for myself).
This year I finally had the courage to start. For the moment it is not bad. I have a lot to learn. My family is supportive, but a lot of people seems to think "you are too old, you are wasting your time, you'll never be good enough". This can be quite depressing. For this reason I think this forum is great, since there are so many witnesses that learning at my age is not impossible. I'm perfecly aware that I'll never be a virtuoso. I do not care. I enjoy every single note that I produce hammering on the keyboard. I believe this post is already too long, so bye for now. Giovanni (aka diddum)
And congratulations on making the decision to learn to play the piano. I used to teach adult beginner classes. Some of my best students were the oldest members.

This is a great place to frequent and there are really terrific and knowledgeable folks here to learn from. Congratulations on starting piano lessons. It’s a hobby that can quickly turn into a passion.
This is the first time I have ever been on a forum and it is nice to read about what people are playing. I too, took lessons as a kid for about five years and quit, then decades went by and we had to keep an upright at our house, which my husband said the piano only can be in our house if I play it, so I took lessons. I've sinced gotten a baby grand, 5'7" Schimmel.

I was born in Ravenna (once and briefly capital of the Roman empire!), but I studied and the rooted myself nearby Pisa (yes, the famous leaning tower but nothing else to write home about...)
