I was wondering, if I walked into your house today, after the long hopefully successful discussion about why there's no need to call the police, what pieces could you play for me right away ?
In other words, of the pieces you've learned over the course of time, how many do you actively try to keep fresh and ready to go ?

I might not play them very well, but I have about 10 or 11 I think.

As a beginner, I could play you four pieces that I keep current. They are not the same four from 6 months ago. And, as I learn more, I will continue to add and drop, but right now, practice time is an issue, so I do not see many more than 4, but who knows....
Some pieces I have "mastered"(maybe memorized is a better term..) I want to forget so I can learn the same piece in a tougher arrangment or key.
Good question. I am interested in what others have to say....

probably 2 - 5 pieces (mostly what i'm working on), some of which however i could just play half way through.
i talked to my teacher about not being able to maintain many pieces i have learned, and he just said that it's normal, and he had to play through some pieces sometimes to maintain them himself.

Hmmm, let's see. I think 4, perhaps 5. But most are short, and since those are all the pieces I currently "know" (as in I don't keep all the stuff from my lesson book- most I leave after we finish with them). I suspect after I learn a few more, that some will come and go.

Maybe 3 or 4, right now, of varying lengths. Not 100% perfectly, though.

I assume that by "keep active" you mean pieces beyond those I'm learning with my teacher. In that case it's seven which is probably my limit.

4-6. It varies, sometimes I'll have fewer but longer pieces.

About 4 to 5. They are not difficult pieces though, the beginner version of songs, but I make sure to review them once a day.

Right now, I am regularly playing four pieces from the RCM Gr 7 repertoire. I need to have three of them for the exam, and they should be memorized, so three of the four I can play from memory. Additionally, I am playing two studies (which I am not required to memorize); and five more pieces that I try to keep polished and ready to play when friends visit (To Zanarkand, The Homecoming, The Gift, and the two Gr 6 studies that I had learned and really loved). So I have 11 pieces that are performance ready.

I can play 1, and butcher 3 others from memory. With sheet music, I can butcher another 5 or 6.

Well, as long as you're not insisting on them being mistake-free, I could play about 12 from memory and another 5 or 6 from sheet music.
kawaigirl, I'm not sure I believe you on that "four." I've heard well more than 4 that you've done recently on the Einaudi thread that would count here, I think.
I haven't made it over to the "long term goals" thread yet, but when I do, I'll be saying that one of my long-term goals is to be able to play a 2-hr set by memory.

I also have to practice them every 1-2 days or I forget them.

Damz, DeepElem, you guys are probably right. Thanks.
I've been very mistake prone since returning to piano so I am trying to learn how to live with all the imperfections.

4 or 5. I am not trying to keep the classical pieces I am working on under my fingers. None of these are from memory.

Six, but most are pretty short! Maybe the better question is, "How much time could you fill, playing for me, with pieces that you keep up?" And the answer might be 20 minutes.

In both cases I'd like to hear a short version of your improvisation I've got a teacher and she asked me to play something that I could play and it turned out to be......nothing Ragnhild

Probably about 6 that I can play entirely from memory, then I'd say 2 to 4 more that I can play if I'm reading the sheet at the same time.
The ones I can play entirely from memory are usually pieces I've put a lot of effort in to learning and enjoy playing very much, so I've played them so many times they are firmly ingrained in my memory.

Which version of The Homecoming do you play Pandora? The original, I think. The sheet music has the Warner Bros. logo on the front. Here's what it looks like: The Homecoming This piece was popular when I first started playing the piano as a kid. It's such a beautiful, haunting melody. It is one of my mother's favourite songs, and I was so thrilled when I finally learned it and was able to play it for her.

From memory, one. Maybe two. And one from the music. Wow, that's a terrible total. I need to work on the longterm goals, I see.
