hi guys,

I'm constantly looking for music sources and I hit on this web page from this piano teacher who recommended some books for exercises "bela barok mikrokosmos" so of course I went and got them.

i got the beginners through the intermediate (i don't like skipping stuff i feel like i'll miss out on something) so of course i'm doing the very basic stuff (it's good for sight reading) and i ran into a little problem.

what am i supposed to do with that note that's hanging between both staffs? it's kind of elementary I know but i don't know the answer and i want to do it right.

thanks in advance

Did you note the asterisk? Check the appendix in the back of the book.

It says:
The rhythmic feeling of the suspensions should be emphasized by some energetic movement such as tapping with the foot in the places marked by the rhythmic signatures between the staves.

Incidentally, I find the Mikrokosmos to be an excellent collection of works, stick with it...

good question, loly
I am a piano teacher and I can venture a guess that while both hands are holding the tied notes D and then G there is a percussive element like a foot tap or a teacher would clap there so that the student would hear the "downbeat" of the measure. I can see a little star before it and after the number 9 there is something too. Perhaps you have to read the instructions or preface and there may be something refering to the star or those percussive parts. Because the hanging note has no refernce line (leger line) it really isn't a tone or pitch.

Good question, though. I have not used bartok's microkosmos, so I am just guessing there is some other information you missed in the beginning of the book.

I've only seen volume six (way too hard for me) but there were some fantastic pieces in there. Let us know how the earlier volumes go; I've been thinking of buying them myself. I don't like to skip stuff either... got to start from the beginning! LOL

By the way, I think that foot tapping or stomping there would be so hard to coordinate. \:\) Is it easier than it sounds? I'll have to give it a go.

It was kind of fun tapping my foot on the floor, It's kind of like patting your head and rubbing your tummy till you get the hang of it.

I was a goof, I did go to the back of the book and read the first line and didn't go any further, I was in the process of walking out the door to pick Leon,up from the vet and it didn't make sense to me at all. I guess I was in a hurry and thinking of Leon, that it didn't register what I was reading.

So far I like them tana, I just started it a few days ago and it's good sight reading and I'm looking forward to getting to more challenging areas.

I ordered them online btw, If you need the info let me know and I'll dig around and post it.

thanks for all the help
