Shiro,
Your letter brought tears close to the surface for me. How sweet.

Gmm1,
Your letter brought a smile to my face. Nope, no tears, no pollen.

And Akira,
Finally, gmm1's digital piano outsmarts him.

I second this, it's a wonderful book.

And my, what a sendoff for your piano! I feel badly now for my poor little spinet. It got a pat on the top and "I hope the movers don't drop you." (;・`ω・´)

I'm not completely wicked, I sent it to a bunch of music teachers, i.e. people who play WAAAAAAY better than me (*´ー`)

Shiro, what beautiful pictures. The only inanimate objects I've ever had that feeling for were my first(only)talking doll (Hi! My name is Noma, and I play records!), my Brownie uniform, and my piano(s). I'm so glad you found a home for it where it will be taken care of and appreciated.

I'm sure when you find a new one and play again, this piano will know how grateful you are to it.

ShiroKuro - Thank you for posting your touching farewell to your piano, and for the beautiful photos!

Thanks Oxford Gal!

And thanks to everyone who's read this thread and understood what I'm talking about. It helps to know I'm not the only one with an intense attachment to my instrument.

I haven't exactly gotten over the loss of my piano, but I feel a little better now. Which is good, because it's time to concentrate on packing and figuring out what to ship! I will be sending myself tons of sheet music and score books. thumb

May I ask how you found yourself in Japan? Will you change your nick to Black&White after you move back to the states? smile

Akira, I came to Japan 12 years ago to teach English. I met my husband here, which is part of the reason why I've stayed so long (we've been living in his home town for the last 9 years.) We moving to the states so I can go to graduate school.

No, I don't think I'll be changing my screen name anytime soon. :p I think I'll find myself so missing Japan that anything that reminds me of it will be held close.

What's your connection with Japan, besides having a Japanese nickname?

I was born in Okinawa, but raised in the states (moved when I was an infant so I don't remember much). Embarassed to say that although I am Japanese, I've visited Japan only once a couple of years ago and can't speak the language. I loved it, though. I didn't see many gaijin when I was there, so I was just a little curious about you. Hope your husband has little trouble acclimating to the states.

Shiro,

A real tribute to your joy of playing the piano! I am sure there is another piano out there for you when you arrive in the states. Take your time while you are in graduate school and play as many pianos as you can. Who knows? You may experience success similar to this Wall street journal reporter . Best wishes and hope you get a new piano soon. smile

Shiro, as others have said, you have posted some beautiful sentiments regarding the great times and memories you have had with your piano.

"It taught me how to breath, listen and to appreciate music". I could not agree with those words more.

Please know however that your piano was merely the means for you to experience those emotions and heighten your senses as it is the music that you created that will always be with you wherever you go.

Those beautiful melodies are not gone with the sale of your piano but are completely in tact waiting inside you to come out and be heard once again. Their just taking a little break for a while, that's all. smile

What a fabulous story and article Mark. I also enjoyed the brief video tour of the Steinway Factory in Queens, NY. Thanks for sharing.
