Now and then I get the urge to improve my sight reading. I do this by trying to play simplified arrangements of things, mostly because I enjoy working on popular music like Broadway musicals and the like.

Unfortunately, I often have purchased simplified music only to find that it isn't an especially good arrangement. It doesn't really sound like it should. I have wasted much money in this way.

I thought it might be useful for anyone who has found a good piece or book of easy arrangements to tell us which ones "sound right."

My favorite book for sight reading these days is "Fiddler on the Roof" arranged by Dan Coates (easy piano selections), by Warner Bros for $10.95. Almost all of the songs in it sound just like they should. I think this is the link:

Fiddler on the Roof

Anyone else have one they can recommend?

Cindy -- who is looking for a good book for "West Side Story" because the one she has is still a little too hard for sight reading

I really like Gershwin Favorites by Hal Leonard, an easy method. Very simple arrangements but harmonically the pieces are complete. Of course it doesn't have the total virtuosic delights found in say Joshua Bell's "Gershwin Fantasy" but hey, that's OK, just to be able to play Gershwin is a thrill for me. I purchased this book after about 3 months of lessons and I really get a kick out of playing this music. It is simple enough to play for a small gathering. Who doesn't know and love most Gershwin tunes? Hey look folks, two hands

Cindy, I'm using "150 Songs with just 3 Chords". Published by Ekay Music (www.musicbooksnow.com), I bought it at Borders for $16.95.

Vintage, did you mean 'The Gershwin Collection' for Easy Piano? I can't find any reference to Gershwin Favorites.

Yes Michael it is The Gershwin Collection, not Gershwin Favorites, sorry. Actually there are 2 editions, one easy piano the other is the full arrangements of these pieces.

I'm not good at sight reeding either, but in my opinion it's always better to try and improve your strengths, not your weaknesses. I don't see any reason to learn to sight read well.. I'm doing just fine - if I spent time learning to sight read I would only fall behind in the rest of my studies.

Vintagefingers,

I bought the Gershwin Collection yesterday, as for the rest of the year I'm putting down the classical and just going to play for fun.. Christmas, jazz, etc.

I love this book! The arrangements are very, very good.

Thanks!
