Hi everyone! I've read this adult forum with lots of interest. A great group of music-loving folks post here. I need some help. I want to start taking piano lessons again. I live in North Arlington in Virginia (just outside Washington DC.) Can anyone recommend the best way to go about finding a good piano teacher? I work full time and consider myself an "advanced" beginner -- having taken lessons for over 10 years as a youngster. My piano technician suggested I contact piano stores / dealers who often have teachers affiliated with them. I've thought also of contacting the music departments of various universities in the area. Short of looking in the yellow pages under Piano...Teaching -- is there something I am overlooking? How did you find your teacher?
Did you "interview" several first? What sorts of questions did you ask them? Did you talk "price" up front? Was there any negotiation of the lesson cost? I'd be most grateful for your help -- anyone?

Virginia, I asked my technician to give me the names of five reputable teachers in my area. I trust this man with my piano, so why would I doubt his references for teachers? I found a perfect match for my needs through him.

I would try asking your technician -- a most valuable source -- first.

I found mine by asking a parent of one of my kid's friends. That parent knew other kids who played piano, so I called their parents and so forth. I wound up with a few names and then began interviewing.

I agree with Plays -- word of mouth is probably best.

Hurry, though. I think many teachers are sorting out their schedules now as school comes into session, and good ones do fill up.

it is important to find a teacher who know how to teach adults, which is quite different from teaching children. 'interview' or meet any teacher first before you decide.

You may also want to contact your local chapter of the MTNA. We have an Oregon Music Teacher's Association from which we can get a list of certified teachers.

I agree with the previous posters, as I initially looked for a teacher using most of these routes. When those leads fell flat, I found my current teacher through www.musicstaff.com. I recall another poster used this method. I was able to email her with specific questions, and set an interview date shortly after. I couldn't be happier with this teacher.

I just love this forum! I now have a list of teachers -- some not far from where I live ! I'll start calling and interviewing soon. Thanks again for answering my call for help. I apologize for being slow today to say thanks to everyone.

I also recommend musicstaff . That's how I found my current teacher. He's great. I was able to quickly see who was close and what they taught, charged, their credentials, etc.

Dear Frank58,
Many thanks for the website -- I read most of the tips -- and the ones on selecting a teacher were very helpful. I'm definitely going to follow those guidelines on interviewing before deciding.

Virginia --

I'm also from the area. I found the Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association most helpful. Telephone (703) 535 6626 -- the officer is appropriately named Andrew Horowitz. The web site is www.nvmta.org/find-a-teacher.html.

I can also send some specific recommendations if you wish.

Good luck!
