Have you all read Pianist Magazine before? It's out of the UK and it's a great rag. They have several scores along with a CD with every issue, plus helpful articles about technique and practice. And they always have a good interview with a pro.

The pieces range in difficulty but are all excellent quality - this month they have The Entertainer, a Beethoven Waltz, a Debussy Lullaby...the CD is excellent quality.

It's expensive here in the states, but I'd still recommend it to the folks on this board.

Just got my copy today and thought I would share \:\)

Yeah, the magazine gets a mention quite alot on the forums.

I think there are mixed opinions on it - for advanced players, the majority of scores seem to be too simple (mentioned in a previous thread). For me, I think they are perfect, although I find it tough to find pieces that I'm willing to learn.

I buy it every issues, just because its a piano mag!

I like to use the beginners pieces as sight-reading practice. And a few months ago I found a cute little Beethoven Eccosaise that was fun to learn. I like it because they expose you to music you might not have heard.

Nice Mag, thank you for sharing, HouseHead78.

I was looking for something like this, so I've already subscribed!

I had a subscription for a year and really liked it. It had a good selection of sheet music in each issue and it comes with a CD that has each piece on it - usually about 30 pieces per issue. The music was mostly classical but there was some popular and jazz and some exercises.

When I got the renewal notice I almost fainted at the price. I think I must have had some kind of discount on the initial subscription.

I forget the exact price now, was it $60 for 1 year - 6 issues? I guess the price is so high since I'm in Virginia and it's coming from the UK. I may subscribe again someday since as I said I really did like it.

About how many pages is each issue?

My hubby was asking what I wanted for mother's day... this sounds better than nonstick cookie sheets. :p

Monica, I had subscibe to this magazine since last year and I really enjoy reading the articles in this magazine as well as the new music in each issue. The music in the mag ranges from beginner difficulty all the way to advance. It is expensive but I thought it was still worth the money.

I'd say theres about 20 or so pages of stories and reviews etc, and about the same of generally classical, but usually one or two modern pieces. I'd love more articles though.

I agree. I was at a car boot sale a while ago and picked up a bound copy of Vol 1 and 2 (1892 and 1893) "The Keyboard" - "A Journal for all interested in the Pianoforte, American Organ, Etc". It has lots of little articles about sound, theory, technique, funny stories etc.

Much as do I enjoy looking through Pianist magazine I think it sould be improved by having a wider range of articles... \:\)

I buy it occasionally. In general I am not a fan.

IMO the reviews of pianos often come across as if they are written by non players or novices, and lack any real critical viewpoint, so they come across as advertorials. I tend to feel that this approach afflicts the whole magazine, including the interviews with musicians.

There are some good articles, and some quite nice scores, but overall it represents poor value for money.

Has anyone ever heard of "Sheet Music" Magazine? Also a very nice read and it also has music ranging from easy to difficult. The magazine generally follows a theme. I have found some very nice music within its pages.

Best Regards,
Nick

I had an amusing e-mail exchange with Pianist magazine after I read this thread. There's an e-mail address to check for distribution in your area and since I live in a fairly large metropolitan area, I hoped that a local store would carry it. I received a reply that they're sorry, there are no distribution points in Montana.

But, Monica, thanks for the idea. I told my hubby and grandson that that's what I want for Mother's Day. Since my husband is allergic to shopping, he's happy.

Yup, I subscribed to it back in the late 70s/early 80s before I quit the first time. I was disappointed to find out it's only published quarterly now, but I resubscribed about 2 years ago. It was once 10x/year, monthly except for a summer issue that covered June-August. You might want to try its sister publication Piano Today as well. It is very similar, but with a bit more emphasis on "how tos."

They were probably confused by MO, and figured it had to be Montana. \:D

If you go to your local library, you can find any of these magazines. There are cards in the magazines that you can use to subscribe. Most also have subscriptions on line.

Piano Fingers,

I just took out a subscription to "Pianist" - if you go to their web site (http://www.pianistmagazine.com/) you'll find the link for US subscriptions. My first copy was waiting when we got back from our trip to England and I feel it was well worth the money.

People who'd like more articles might like to check out "International Piano" (http://www.pianomagazine.com/). I found a copy in The Coop in Harvard Square recently. No music, but a lot of interviews and reviews. On balance I think I like "Pianist" better, but they're both good fixes for a pianoholic.

The first few beginner pieces in this month's Pianist magazine were great sight-reading practice, but unfortunately I didn't find any in this one that I really want to learn.

I was wrong about International Pianist - there is one piece of music. I think it's not as simple as it looks.
