An interesting thing happened today. I am in a group piano class at my college and we use digital pianos. All the pianos are connected to a box at the instructor's piano. So while we were playing, we heard voices through our headphones. It was truckers talking on their radio. I guess somehow the frequency of the trucker's radios were the same as the equipment in class.
Note: our headphones are not wireless.

Very weird. I wonder if they heard you!!! How are you liking that group class? Do you feel like you get enough (or any?) individualized feedback?

I am in part 2 of the class (we'll call this class B. Took class A last semester). There are two class B this semester and I am in one of them. The other class has 8 students and that's normal. However, my class only has me and another person. So only 2 students in class. Since there are only two of us (was 3 but one dropped out), it's more of a one on one instruction and she switches between listening to me an the other student.

sounds like something that happens often enough. once i was using signal equipment to communicate with friends in another country, and we picked up signals from sailors nearby. they cursed at us because our conversation caused them to become confused

I don't want to get off topic too much since it is a piano forum but two semesters ago, my physics professor said that when he was at another university, they were working on something with frequency and I guess when they turned on the equipment, the frequency was high enough to be in the range of the goverment's frequency. A few moments later he got a call from the government and they ordered him to turn off the machine IMMEDIATELY.

It's even more interesting that the gov was able to pinpoint the location (and phone #) where the frequency generator was from.

This is a fairly common problem with audio equipment. Strong nearby radio signals can be partially demodulated (converted into audio) by audio cabling that is not fully shielded and does not have 100% solid connections.

I don't know... The government types probably figured those weirdos at the university were at it again...

I once read of a person who claimed that he could pick up conversations through the fillings in his teeth. This person according to the report was not being delusional, and was not suffering from a mental illness.
I have heard of mentally ill people hearing voices in their heads, but picking up conversations via one's teeth is a new one.

Gilligan's mouth once became a radio when a filling in a tooth was knocked loose (second season, episode 10). So it must be true.
We're still off topic, aren't we?

Imagine what the truckers were hearing. "10-4 Red Rider. I'm hearing it too. Sounds like 15 pianos all playing Fur Elise."

This phenomenon is known as RFI (Radio Frequency Interference). The radio waves are being picked up by various cables (power cables, headphone cables, component interconnects, etc.) which act like antennas and convert the radio waves into electrical signals. These electrical signals are then demodulated by some electrical component in the system such as an amplifier - perhaps the amplifier in the headphone jack of the digital pianos in this case. You can put snap-together ferrite cores around cables to reduce RFI. These ferrite cores are readily available at RadioShack and other electronic stores --> Ferrite Cores . Using shorter cables where possible may also help.
