Hi All,

Does anyone have any tips on how to quickly spot which keys need to be pressed in order to correctly play an inversion of a chord?

For example, if I see a chord in root position, I dont really have to think about it. I look for the root key on the keyboard, and use 1-3-5 to play it. However, for the inversions, I'm not quick with it. First inversions aren't so bad, because when I look at the keyboard, I try to see the three keys that would be played for root position, and then visually toss out the root key, and look for it one octave up. For second inversions I would have to visuallize the three keys for the root case, and then disregard two of them, which is a total waste of time. For this case I pretty much have to stop "playing" and start hunting.

Can anyone share any tips they use to quickly recognize the keys? Or is this one of those things where there is simply no shortcut to it?

At first glance I'd say there's not to many shortcuts ... they just have to be played often enough to become "instinctive" (incorrect use of the word, but it fits somehow.) For the last inversion (V, I, III) you could try looking for the root with your "middle" finger or eye, and then slide up an easy 3rd to the top note, and stretch down the 4th to the V. That seems a few mental steps quicker than the method you mentioned.
