In the sheet below, I marked two rests, it seems to me that they should be 1/8 rests, instead of the 1/4 rests that they are, because the way it is, the note values in the treble clef don't add up to more than 1.

Second quesion is sort of related to the first one. I color coded the notes that I am hitting at the same time (same color, means I press both notes at the same time, with my left and right hand). Is my timing correct?

Third question is what is the value of the 1/8note with two dots (it appears in a lower measure)

Thanks for the answers:

it is correct. the 2 rests are corresponding the the lower notes C and D, and after that you match the following top F with lower F#+D and top E with lower A+D .

Hi Eternal,

A lot of the measures you show do not measure up. (pun unintended)

What stands out to me is the 3 above the quarter / eigth notes in the first measure you are questioning. I am wondering if this should be read as a triplet combination instead of questioning the length of the rests. If so, then the first two quarter rests correspond to the four eighth notes on the next staff and then the two quarters and two eighths would be played triplet against the four eighth note beats on the right hand piano staff.

The last measure on the middle line also does not have enought notes / rests to make a full 4/4 measure.

Same with the middle measure on the last line.

Then we come to the first measure on the last line. Normally a double dotted note is read as follows:
half dot dot = half + quarter + eighth
quarter dot dot = quarter + eighth + sixteenth
eighth dot dot = eighth + sixteenth + thirtysecond
etc.

Again, this measure does not add up.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Rich

The rests may very well be correct. The following notes are a tuplet - 3 quarter notes in the space of 2, with the last of the 3 quarter notes being comprised of two eighth notes.

The measure with the double-dotted 8th note is just plain wrong. (A double dotted 8th would be equal to an 8th plus a 16th plus a 32nd.) Measure 8 makes no sense either.

It's not a professionally produced score, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

On a side note, the chord progression is from Elgar's "Enigma Variations" and the middle staff outlines the basic theme of the orchestral work.

So can anyone tell me if I'm playing the color coded notes at the right moment? The rests didn't make sense, so I ended up counting from the end of the measure, which is how I arrived at my sequence.

You're right - it's actually a remix of that piece by Rob Dougan, called "Clubbed To Death" - and the trick is to play all 3 staffs with two hands, like in this video:

Most people only do 2 staffs, without the "third hand" like here:

The last two beats of the measure should be a 3 against 4 rhythm.

F goes with the A not the F#.

Count it as if there is a bracket above the last four notes and a triplet indicator. In fact it is there - the small three's above the notes. It is just not clear.
