Oops, sorry! I took the photos down because they are huge, even though I resized them (or thought I did!) How can I get photos to not fill up the whole page here? Can someone please clue me in and I will re-post them! Thanks!

Keep them 640 x 480 and it should be fine. After all it will all depend what screen resolution has a viewer set up on his computer. For example, for somebody who runs screen in 1440 x 900 they will seem rather small, but some other viewer with 800 x 600 will see your pictures pretty large.

Do I make sense?

Ok, here's another try, hope it works this time!

I said I would post a photo of my practice space, so here it is. This is me and Mr. ShiroKuro. When we sit properly, no problems, but if one of us wants to stretch...

Here's a bigger pic of my piano, which I left big (hope it's not too big) so that you can see that our floor is actually traditional Japanese matt, called Tatami. The matt is on top of a wooden frame, which does its best to hold up the piano! But the tatami under the piano is about a cm lower than the rest of the tatami!

ShiroKuro, yes, that is tight.

I love the picture of you. There you are, your face totally obscured by your hair. Very mysterious!

Which gives me an idea. Wouldn't it be fun if we posted pics of our pianos? But, in true AB style, we wouldn't just post a pic of the instrument. That's so *common!* \:\)

No, it has to be a pic of you playing the instrument, your features obscured if you like. I'll see if I can get one of my kids to take a pic of me practicing.

Oh, ShiroKuro! Now I really feel for you! And, I thought I had it bad with my space! I am glad, though, that your husband can concentrate as hard as he can while using the computer that the piano playing doesn't really bother him. Of course, my suspicion is that you play very well and he enjoys it anyway.

Plays--I don't think I have seen a pic of your piano before. It looks lovely, and you look so serene playing it. What kind of piano is it? I am also curious about the artwork behind you...?

I was playing the middle movement of the Pathetique when that picture was taken, so I was sort of lost in my own musical world. \:\)

The piano is a NY Steinway L, and the art behind me is a portrait by Russell Crayen, dated 1797, of HRH the Prince of Wales (George IV) with his nanny, Mrs. Martha Gunn, at Brighton. It's my favorite personal piece of artwork - thanks for asking about it.

This is not a current picture, but one of my faves from 2002. I'm the one in the middle, my younger son is closest to the camera, and my older son is playing down in the bass. The cat is helping. The picture is called "Six Hands Four Paws." The piano is a Weinbach 170, and we had just remodeled the front of the house so that we could fit a grand piano into it!

Cheers, Michele

Here's Adagiolady and I practicing. She's the blonde & I'm the brownette.

Here's my space - it used to be the livingroom, now it's the piano room! It was too small for a living room anyway. The cathedral ceiling really helps with the sound.

you guys are so cute...

Before you two came to the forum we discussed playing Schubert's Fantasy Opus 103 - fopr 4 hands. Elena played it on her CD and I for one thought I should learn it if I ever I got a chance to meet her and there was a piano lying around. The opening theme is incredibly beautiful and I think you can download a pdf of the first part of the fantasy here..

http://www.8notes.com/scores/1243.asp?ftype=ext

I bet you could do it together. Classical Archives has a horrible midi recording.

We just entered the modern age and got a digital camera, so I'll have my husband take a picture of me and we'll post it.

ShiroKuro, I thought I had it bad, being in the room with the only TV hooked up to cable! At least we don't knock heads if one of us stretches unexpectedly!

Great photos everyone.

Oooh I love seeing everyone's pictures!!!!! And I am just drooling over all the space, and the grands, and the artwork!!! (and the chicken!!)

Apple, what artwork do you have there? It's fantastic. And the colors, with the black piano!!! I love it!

Teachum, what kind of a piano is that? The finish/color is really lovely!

And Michele, with 2 hands and 4 paws! Very cute, and nice window thing-ys!

ChickGrand, I noticed that you have a chandelier over your piano, I bet that looks fantastic. And the picture of your piano from the top is really great, the inside of grands are soo pretty!!!

It's a good thing there's no limit on the number of exclamation points per post, because I'm sure I'd be over if there was!

Keep the pictures coming! They are only making me jealous, but I love to see them!

Go here

http://www.pianoworld.com/Uploads/fileuploader2.html

to upload your photo, then a URL for it will be sent to your email. When using the full reply form, click once on "image" (below the reply form among the many other "instand UBB code" options) This will bring up a window where you can C and P the URL, and then in the post it will appear as a photo.

The only trouble is, the photos tend to be huge, so you might want to resize it *before* uploading. (Something like 640 X 480 as suggested by mxs)

Wow, I sound like a pro, and I only just figured this out yesterday! \:\)

KathyK - It's an Estonia 190 - Satin Mahogany. It was about 1 month old in this picture. Adagiolady came over to test drive it.

Rick - Thanks for fixing the picture. I can never remember how to do that. We joke about the rivalry, but we've never had a serious fight in our lives, except when we were kids. Even then we had to keep it quiet because our mom didn't let us fight things out! Also - your piano is gorgeous - huge too!

Apple - I hope someday to be good enough to play a duet with Adagiolady. I'm still a little intimidated. I get all nervous.

Michele - my cats don't come in the house, but one of my fox terriers would love to get on the bench with me when I play. It's always fun to see everyone's pic.

I would, but I play on a portable Yamaha keyboard at present. I would be embarrassed to post a picture of me playing a small keyboard, with all these beautiful grand pictures floating around. I suppose I could go into a piano shop and pose for a picture in front of a 'real' piano, but I have too much integrity to do that. \:\)

Actually, we have no representives from the Spinet Club either. You could help fill out two categories!

(I would post a picture, but I would need a few weeks shoveling out the living room before my wife would let me take a picture of it.)

You notice that my piano is covered with music and other junk, but we took the picture anyway because of the cat! She loved the piano. She was 19 when she passed away, now wee have a younger cat who doesn't care about the piano at all.

Shiro: the shutters on the windows are gone; we have fabric shades now. The shutters let in too much sunlight over the top in the winter, and the piano technician told me I had to cover the windows...or else! (she was trying to tune, and the tuning kept changing because of the sun)

No can do. You see, the very foundations of the music would be torn asunder if the music world were to see a pianist of my caliber playing a spinet. People would realize that they've wasted tens of thousands of dollars on pianos that are big enough to house small cars, hundreds of thousands of dollars to build homes or rooms large enough to accommodate those instruments.

No, I think I prefer the status quo. The alternative--people throwing their grand pianos from windows, junkyards piling up with the huge black carcasses, mobs of people rushing homes that have spinets--is unthinkable.

Hey, Michael![/b] You said you "have a thing" for Virginia and Virginians. Have you "met" Virginia (from Virginia)? She's great!

I've enjoyed seeing all the pics. ChickGrand[/b]--you're too funny! Teachum[/b]--that's such a great pic!

I'll try to post one myself soon. In the meantime, here is at least a pic of my piano:
(Edit: originally posted the URL as opposed to the picture--Duh!)

You can't really see the "space" around it. That's because there really is no space around it! About four feet from the back of the bench begins our teeny, tiny galley kitchen. Not too far to the left is the dining table.

kathyk--it's one of the Peter Maly designed Sauters. The wood is cherry, and it has just a plain wax finish.

markb--Oh, I dunno... teeny, tiny cups would fit! Shot glasses, perhaps? ;\) Really, though, they are actually candleholders! The piano even came with candles! I had a perfect excuse to use them a couple of weeks ago. We lost power, but just as I was getting the candles out, it went back on! Maybe next time.

Candleholders! Wicked cool! TK, get yourself some more candles in there, stat!

Man, I really should put something -- anything -- on my piano. It's just this huge expanse of polished mahogany, just waiting to be scratched. Again.

There was one thing on it for a while. Mr. Sphinx gave me a framed Gary Larson print. It is a concert pianist addressing the audience: "Don't make me come over there."

tk--Gorgeous piano! But a word of caution: don't let candles get anywhere near your piano! We had a candle tip over and it *burned* our piano. It was repaired, but you can still see the scar. Mr. AdagioM didn't think it made sense to replace the whole lid over a cosmetic issue, and it makes a good story, anyway. ;\)

I think I'd put shot glasses in there...

That is an extremely cool looking piano. And bench, I might add. Do you love it? I thought maybe the brackets involved being shackled to the piano until you had put in enough practice time every day.

Franklin Pangborn was an actor, primarily of the silent movie era, known for playing uptight, accountant types. Specifically, he played the bank examiner in the W.C. Fields movie "The Bank Dick", my favorite comedy of that era.

(I work at a bank, and started out as an auditor, so he is sort of a patron saint. . .)

There's no such thing as an uptight accountant.

And now we have "Jerry with Clock."

What's the third?

That grain pattern on the bent side is gorgeous. I love rosewood, especially when it's done in a red tint and not the brown. Irving's Centennial D is a gorgeous example. I've seen a few others. I'll add yours to my list of favorite red rosewoods with great grain patterns.

I had some thoughts of letting Jerry Luke pose with the Chickering which he can claim is his piano instead of that keyboard, if I can claim his face. See, we'll be twins and win-win. That is if he'll get rid of that silly riding hat.

Hi, Cindy:

I wanted an avatar that wasn't someone else's; JimBob uses Mona Lisa, too, and posts over on the piano forum. Didn't want to look like I was poaching. And Mookie is kinda cute, too.

most computers come with 'Paint' ... if I right click on a photo save it to my desktop then right click it, chose edit, and Paint opens. Then I chose Image at the top.. go to skew and put the percentage at 30% for both directions and then save it again.

Absolutely! My brother went to school with R.E. Lee V -- are you from that family? I was more outspoken when I was younger, and when my brother introduced me to Bob Lee I brazenly said to him "that's a really tough name to live up to."

BTW, I have an long string of ancestors from Massachussets.

Any space with a beautiful grand, *and* a classical guitar, is by it's very nature inspiring! And what is that mini-piano thing? Is it a little table? Very charming!

I assume it was a classical guitar. Do you play? What do you do about fingernails?

I agree with ShiroKuro. I liked it. It's cozy without being crowded. I like the lines of the modern furniture but in that sloped-walled cottage setting. I like the cabinets under the windows. And I like the low lighting for cozy evenings at home, but my only suggestion would be to add recessed lighting that is separately controllable so that you can dramatically boost the lighting just when wanted and sort of spotlight elements of the room, giving the room a definition of depth. But aside from that one thought, I quite like it. It looks like an artist's loft. Which would be my goal.

That reminds me, we haven't seen Zongora in a very long time with his wonderful music room and great collection of photographs... \:\(

Thanks guys and girls for the encouragement. I think it needs some color on the walls and if you can be here in person, the wallpaper is quite blah.

Shirokuro, I used to play classical guitar but stopped because of focal dystonia. I was officially diagnosed early Feb. I'm still active in the classical guitar community and sit on a board which focuses almost entirely on bringing classical guitar to Minnesota.

The little piano is Garrett's, who is only 20 months old. He's given up on that and wants to play the big piano now. ;\)

Nice pianos and piano spaces everyone! And, MAN! Some of your places belong in magazines!

Doug-- \:D I like your picture!

miseenplace--I like your physical space itself quite a bit, but if you find it uninspiring, perhaps you are right about a change in wall color...?

Okay, so I am finally getting around to posting a picture of me as well at the piano (as opposed to just the piano). So, here it is... A picture of me at my piano....

When I see all these beautiful grand pianos in their likewise beautiful surroundings, I hate to show my little digital piano put into the only available corner of my room. I have a great location for a 6' grand, but I'm not likely to get the necessary approval for either the grand piano or the location very soon.

Absolutely! My brother went to school with R.E. Lee V -- are you from that family? I was more outspoken when I was younger, and when my brother introduced me to Bob Lee I brazenly said to him "that's a really tough name to live up to."

Yes, but I'm not exactly sure where. My mother said great grandfather, but I've never been able to find my garndmother's name in any of his biographies with geneologies. I have one living cousin from the family and she doesn't know either. Neither of us have ever gone to great lengths to pursue it. I lived with my grandmother for a year when I was about 10 or 11 but never questioned it. I have my grandmother's bible on my desk engraved with her name, dated March 30, 1890.
Do you still have family in MA now?

Truth be told, while I'm actually practicing, that looks quite like my own area. I end up with books and my own various custom-printed music-desk-wide-sheets sets all over the floor, the music desk and surrounding chairs. Sometimes they spill over onto the high or long strings and I don't notice until I use those keys. I'm always wondering, "Where the

I always try to keep a minimum of stuff on the top of my piano, loose sheets of the pieces I'm working on and the Czerny and Hanon books, and a metronome and clock and that's it. I keep all my billions and billions of books and other piano related things (cleaning stuff etc) on shelves throughout the house (those books keep multiplying when I'm not looking)

I read comewhere once that you're not really supposed to have too much on the top of an upright, especially heavy music books, and for some reason that suggestion stuck with me. Mr ShiroKuro appreciates it at least because it forces me to cut down on clutter.

Well finally got around to uploading some new pics and this one is for Bob Muir because he made some great recommendations on piano positioning that I finally followed so now I face out into the room and even can look out the window while I practice. Maybe that's not such a good thing now that I think of it ;\)
We've also been doing some more painting in that room, so here is a pic after repositioning the piano but before new paint:

After painting:

View from bench (I know the pic is horrible since it was shot into the sun coming through shades)

A couple more:

I wasn't too sure about the color but now that it's done I really like it. Oh was I supposed to be included in these sorry but that'll take another set of pics and the way I procrastinate...

Michael - Yes that's the JP185 in Bubinga; I really like yours too with rosewood grain.

cg - I looked online for a cabinet and just really couldn't find one I felt good about so one of my friends (we worked together until he retired to be a furniture/cabinet maker) built that one for me.

Apple - Thank you so much that means a lot coming from you since I really admire your artistic way with color.

Cathy,

Ditto Classicalgirl...the chest is beautiful! If I was a bettin' girl I'd bet your friend could get plenty of business from the PW members. Think he'd be interested?

But what I want to know is, where did you get the "music" on the wall? I'd love to have something like that. Seems to me that I've seen another one similar in somebody's pic here in PW; Plays maybe?

Not, Plays. Derick has the same thing or something very similar on the wall over the tail of his Boesendorfer, with American southwest pottery paintings along the wall parallel to the long side.

I really like that music cabinet too. Hobby Lobby is selling some quite like that. I looked at them. Not so badly priced either.

Well I know my buddy would love the business but he ordered bubinga wood so I wouldn't necessarily call it a deal. But if anyone is interested I can PM you his contact info.

Rick - I was gonna say the same thing I noticed the music staff in Derick's photo too. I looked online and saw it there but actually I found one for a bit less at one of the local furniture stores.

BTW - I guess I should give hubby credit for the paint he's been a painting madman just finished our entryway today.

It's great to see everyone's pianos. All are beautiful no matter how big or small because there's a piano there to enjoy.

Here are a couple of updated pictures of my piano area. Some of you may remember me as having a pool in the room, torn out for something more important! I'd like to eventually have some music-related artwork. I also have my digital piano and my desk/computer in the room.

Sleepingcats,

Very nice. We have a similar color on our walls. Really looks good with a black piano.

Looks blue in the photo but it's really a light green.

Thanks everyone for the compliments. I love the calmness of my room too (except for the clutter at my desk).

Apple,

My Fandrich & Sons started out as a brand new Dongbei 6'1" high-polished grand. The Fandrichs removed the innards and made a lot of improvements/changes such as their key-weighting system, changing the hammers to Ronsen-Wurzen, changing the bass strings to Arledge, re-doing the pedal/lyre system and others. I had them refinish the piano to a satin finish as well. You can see more detailed info on what they change on their website:

I seriously seriously considered one of their grands... I just live too far away from the northwest... How do you like it?

Their pianos are supposed to be SUPERB!!!

Sorry to let you dudes down (especially Jerry) but if you've seen the movie "dodgeball"

Then you could say...We are more "Ordinary Joes" than "Globo Gym" \:\(

However, I will supply a photo of the gym keyboard \:\) ...unfortunately, not draped with one of the "Eric Prydz" video gals...darn it \:\(

So many cool looking pictures here!

Here is our new piano in the living room:
http://www.pianoworld.com/Uploads/files/Bosendorfer_room.jpg

Our older piano in the study.
http://www.pianoworld.com/Uploads/files/Yamaha_room.jpg

Now both boys an practice at the same time \:D

If anyone can tell me how to get the picture in the post versus the link please tell me. I continue to be 'ignorant' in that minor detail.

Enjoy,

Charles

Frank R - That's you, I presume, in the portrait on the wall? And the whole R family? And pardon me for not knowing this, but do any of the rest of the gang play?

These are great pictures.

As "sleepingcats" said - they are all beautiful, and played by beautiful people.

Thanks to all for sharing.

I especially love your Boesendorfer room. The earth tones work very well with the ebony satin and the sky view out the windows is wonderful.

To get the pictures to show up in your post, you may need to change a setting in your profile to enable the "full" reply window, if you are only seeing the "quick" reply window. I use only the full reply window. When using the full reply window, there are a series of blue and white buttons for "Instant UBB Code, next to those "Instant Graemlins". To insert a picture, lick the lower right button that says "IMAGE". That brings up a dialogue box. Paste the URL for the picture you want to show up in your post. It will then show up in the post instead of showing as just a URL. The code in the message composition window would then look like this (except there would be no spaces between the brackets--I added those so the code will show in this post):

[ I M G ]http://www.pianoworld.com/ubb/ubb/confused.gif[ / I M G ]

It is that bracketed code that the "IMAGE" button adds. All UBB code has a beginning and an ending code, with the ending code having the slash mark for the closing one of the pair.

You need to use PhotoShop, Paint, Compupic, or some similar graphics program to resize the image to usually not more than 640 pixels wide. There is supposed to be HTML code that can by typed in as well, to leave the image as is, but force it to display smaller, but I have never been able to make the usual HTML code work here.

Huh? What? I thought you all were kidding. Do you practice piano at a gym? Or is there live music for the aerobics class or something?

Hi ShiroKuro

I own the gym...so I exercise (pardon the pun) the right to practise there whenever I jolly well feel like it. ;\)

Although as a general rule I have some in-ear phones that I wear when practising during quieter times (say in the afternoons) so as not to upset (and lose) too many of my members.

Although I will crank it up and play for anyone who is interested in hearing how I am getting along...which amazingly has cured me of many of my initial performance nerves. \:D

regards

I own the Privia PX100 also. I love it. I can't say that it loves me though. At least not yet.

Here's my piano. It's an old picture, but I'm too lazy to get the digital camera and take a new picture. \:D

It's a Technics SX-PC12. I got it in '98 or '99. I took lessons for a while, but had to stop after I moved due to a lack of finances. Now, I have a lack of finances and a lack of confidence.

And I FINALLY got to my 500th post!
