Is it to early to pick mazurkas? op.24 no.2 and op.67 posth. no.4 I can do. If it is, then forget I made this post 60, a lot of marukas to distribute, though, and it seemed there was issues with the 26 preludes being distributed.

Theowne:
A little early, but be on the look-out for the "offical" thread and get your "order" in early. As far as playing all 60, who knows that that may be a bit undoable, but we'll see.
Thank you for your interest...and especially your interest in the mazurkas. Aren't they wonderful?
Kathleen

Will do, Peyton. Those two are yours. Now I just have to make note of this somewhere.
Gosh, what have I started? But I just hope more people get wind of this and start thinking about it.

Mazurkas! The first Chopin piece I ever learned was a mazurka - Op. 24, No. 3. Wow, that must have been 13 years ago now. I still have my old book... Maybe I'll dust it off and join in this time.

I love the Mazurkas, too. Kathleen, you have really opened Pandora's Box here! I'm going to be looking through Mazurkas tomorrow when I should be recording my Prelude!

I would like to participate too, but cannot commit as of yet because I still do not have recording capabilities! I'm trying to learn what it is I need, and if I can get set up within the next month or so... I'll pick something and enter officially! (that is, if anything is left!)

The only one I know (or I should say have any hope of knowing by then) is Op 17 #4. I would dearly love to be included.
Peyton and Shubertian: Rock paper scissors for it?
Unless someone can suggest something at a similar level (she said shaking).

Just recently started on Op. 33 No. 4 - my first mazurka and first Chopin piece. At Burgmueller and 2part-invention level, I'm rather proud my teacher let me start on it.
Can you put me down on it?

Now if you adult beginners cant stop fighting over who gets 17/4 NOBODY gets to play it =
We may have to have a separate recital just for 17/4
SCISSORS!

[/b] Kathleen says it's mine na, na na na na na. :p But seriously, I don't see why we couldn't share. But I leave that to those running this shin-dig. That's my favorite Mazurka which is why I wanted to be sure to get my name in early. I missed out on my favorite preludes.

My favourites are 63/3 and 33/4. I think Hershey's favourite is 63/3 also, so if he wants that one I'm happy with 33/4. Personally I think people should only be allowed to "book" one Mazurka until no-one else wants to join in. Also, if there aren't enough takers we could do a second Mazurka-thon in 2010.
This is a delicious idea - but I'd better get back to my Prelude for now....

Good Gravy! This post was just suppose to be a "tickler." It looks as if I have started a diludge, but hey, who's complaining.
DeepElm: Since there are 60+ mazurkas, I don't know of a list that indicates the levels of all, but I will look. The only thing I can say at this point is that most are around the 6 level. They may be a few 4's, and then some that are longer, more complicated, that are in the 7 plus range. What I would suggest is to listen to as many as you can stand, over a period of a week or so, and then write down the ones that appeal to you. If you can, find the sheet music (off the internet, for free). I'm sure you will be able to tell which ones you might be able to handle. In the meantime, I will try to find a listing. So happy you are interested. I just finished one that was a level 6, but it wasn't difficult at all. A lot of repeating; however, as in the case of most of the mazurkas, it is the tempo/rubato/rhythm that is tricky and thus may place them at the 6 level.
I am thrilled that so many of you are interested. I will start a list, but please know that this can't be considered official until we really get into this and start discussing all the details and such. However, I do feel that since some of you have indicated your preferrence so early, your choices should be honored.
And, I think that the hope of playing all 60+ of them is far too ambitious, considering we had a difficult time (almost) in getting enough people for the 24+2 preludes. So, we might save some mazurkas for the following recital (as someone suggested).
Again, nothing is written in stone as of yet, but I will start the list, as promised.
All you fighting for op. 17/4...good luck.
I am so cheered by this.
Kathleen

I withdraw my request for 17/4. It would be too much pressure if I botched it anyway, given there was so much good competition for it. Good luck y'all.

I'm putting me down for 67/2 (Posth) {edit: changed my mind to the haunting 68/2)
Everyone is "on the list" as they have selected which one they want to play...as indicated by the date submitted. First come....
I do believe (as Ramona suggested) that we might be thinking of playing just one. That way we will have many left to play in 2010, which will be Chopin's birthday. And what better way to celebrate it than by playing his most distinctive and unique Polish compositions, a genre that he created with such love of homeland.
So those of you who posted a duplicate of one previously submitted, please be thinking of another. I think this is the fairest way to go, unless someone gives a better idea and one that we can all agree on.
Kathleen

I'm off with the 17/4 too - Peyton I hope you can do a PERFECT job with it now that you've TAKEN IT AWAY! from many many other people who ALSO wanted to do it and would PROBABLY have done it BETTER than you but NOW it's too late so we are all going to WATCH YOU to make sure YOU do a better job then we would have so NO PRESSURE so what if it's ONLY my favorite mazurka.
Can you do 2? It looks like we might have to - are there 57 people on this board who will respond to this summons? If we can I"ll do Op 30 #3, 4

BTW - I just downloaded WIlliam Kapell's recording of some (not even half) of the mazurkas and it is excellent, wonderful - how aweful he died at the age of 31

I like -- I think it's Op. 6 No. 1 (the first one). I'll have to think about others. My life is just on hold right now for the next few weeks.

No! Just out of time. I was just about to pick 6/1. That's my favourite out of all of them.
For others, just tell me the hard ones, I'm there.
