I found this song to be unique in the way it features the melody being played primarily in the left hand. The waves of emotion that are played in the left hand sound to me like the reflections of a soulful expression. The right hand played has been thought by some to sound like tolling bells. There are some that refer to this piece as the Tolling Bells Prelude. |

It's funny how hypercritical one can become listening to one's own 'work.' What's going through my mind as I play is the idealized version my mind hears. The real thing often sounds a bit different. :-) |

Hopefully, I'm not abusing the ABF recital rules or your ears too much by squeezing two movements of this Sonatina into one ABF recital submission. After missing the deadline for the August recital, I definitely wanted to submit for this one.
I've been playing the first movement of this Sonatina since the spring and finished it at lessons in June, but I still keep playing it while I work on the second and third movements. Unfortunately, parts are still a little murky and troublesome areas still crop up when I play it and I never know where they'll strike. Movement II I'll be playing at my November recital framed by two other pieces (a Bach Prelude and a Grieg Waltz).
Unfortunately, red dot time has been scarce lately and getting in one session was the best I could do. In this recording, I edited out two errors in movement I. Usually, I'd have various children talking or crying in the background. For this one, I recorded while they were taking a walk, but this time I had plumbers working in the house (see movement 2)! Sorry!  |

I’m sure many of you know the mechanism .
On the piano I’m completely self-taught. I can play from sheet music and by ear. I have learned this tune playing only by ear - my way. I play EVERYTHING my way . That’s why if I have to play from sheet music I prefer lead sheets. They gave freedom I need .
What kind of music do I want to play? Known standards in the style between jazz and so called cocktail piano, you know, beautiful melody and jazzy chords. How far away am I from that goal? Please, tell me!
I’m aware that my performance is far from perfect but I’m just an Adult Beginner... |

A few notes that don't sound (although I'm quite sure I hit them!!) I think the ones that do sound are correct!! I only want positive feedback (lie if you have to) :-)) because my teacher picks this one apart each week. |

A trip through the French countryside. In this piece, Ravel takes the listener through pentatonic, chromatic and diatonic melodies, peppered with his trademark major and minor seventh chords all along with the way, all in three charming minutes, and all grounded on the simple, pleasant pentatonic melody that opens the piece (At 0.03 and 0:44). Listen for those sublime climaxes at 0;41, 1;23 and 2;36.
I kind of butcher it a few times, and I really screwed up the very end (the "trill" type part) which should sound much more haunting than the noise I produce to finish the piece.
It's a bit quiet, turn the sound up. |
