I noticed that for some reason you can't play my piece directly from Box.net. If you click on the "Play" button it will prompt you for downloading the mp3 file instead of popping up the box.net player. Is it because I'm using the wrong bit rate?
Another question is how do you convert your audacity data to mp3? I usually convert it to a .wav file first then use a third party app to convert to an mp3. I've tried using Audacity to convert directly to an mp3, but the mp3 can't be played by any of the standard mp3 players.

ckcornflake, I click on the "play" button and it pulls up Windows Media for me and plays it on that. (Rather than the usual boxnet player). I have no reason why.
I use audacity to convert to mp3, but you need to download the Lame application to do so. I'm not sure why yours don't play in standard players, because I have no trouble with the mp3s I create through audacity. Maybe it's the bit rate thing again????
[looks around frantically for copper or Bob Muir or somebody else who understands all this recording/computer stuff to answer.]

This happens to me as well, and I actually thought it might discourage some people from listening my piece (streaming is so much quicker and easier).

Hi ckcornflake I notice that too...with some of my files, some they play in the player others want to be downloaded and I don't know why either [scratches head]? I am pretty sure I had to download something to convert to .mp3 with audacity but, it so long ago I can't remember what it was?? so, yeah on the whole I've not been much help really  Lee

I notice that our pieces are encoded as MPEG-1 layer 3, while the others seem to be MPEG-2 layer 3. That would be the problem, I suppose.

I think it has to do with variable bitrate encoding. If you encode your MP3's with constant bitrate (CBR) then they'll play fine in the box.net player. This is true for many web-based players, by the way. I don't know if you can set it up in Audacity to encode as CBR; I use WinLame instead.

The ckcornflake mp3 file is recorded at 48 kHz This help page: http://www.box.net/help/99 at box.net says The Adobe flash player has a problem playing mp3 files that are encoded at a rate that is not a multiple of 11.025 kHz. This effect is sometimes called the “chipmunk†effect: the music is played at double speed. To avoid this, please encode mp3's at 11.025 kHz 22.050 kHz or 44.100 kHz.
I'm not sure this is the problem, but my recording at 44 kHz works OK.

Interesting info. I'm going to go home for lunch and try some stuff! I do have the Lame dll/application thingy and it does convert files to mp3's. It's just not converting them correctly or something. I'll try messing around with the bit rates and see if that fixes the problem.
