On another thread, a question was raised as to the possibility of a list somewhere that indicated the great composers and gave their "signs" and corresponding traits under these signs. Of course, we don't believe in such nonsense. For Example: Chopin was a Pisces[/b] The very imaginative and sensitive Pisces zodiac sign will be among the very best artists and story tellers there are. They can feel in depths and levels that us ordinary mortals can only imagine. They are very loving people and are a bit more sensitive then the other zodiac signs. Be careful when dealing with the Pisces you are in love with, because absent minded comments can sometimes cut them deep. Summary of Positive Traits[/b] Imaginative and sensitive Compassionate and kind Selfless and unworldly Intuitive and sympathetic On the Dark Side:[/b] Escapist and idealistic Secretive and vague Weak-willed and easily led **************** Really quite accurate for Chopin, as far as we can tell. Another person on the thread said that at one time she did some research and discovered that 25% of the most famous composers were under the Pisces sign. This is quite intersting, I think. I would be willing to look up some of the greats, then and now...mostly then, and list their sign and traits. If anyone is interested, let me know of a composer or two, and I'll post the results right here. Kathleen HERE IS THE PROMISED LIST: AQUARIUS Traditional Friendly and humanitarian Honest and loyal Original and inventive Independent and intellectual On the dark side.... Intractable and contrary Perverse and unpredictable Unemotional and detached **************** SCHUBERT, ARTUR RUBINSTEIN PICSES Traditional Imaginative and sensitive Compassionate and kind Selfless and unworldly Intuitive and sympathetic On the dark side.... Escapist and idealistic Secretive and vague Weak-willed and easily led ******************** CHOPIN, HANDEL, STRAUSS. SR. ARIES Traditional Adventurous and energetic Pioneering and courageous Enthusiastic and confident Dynamic and quick-witted On the dark side... Selfish and quick-tempered Impulsive and impatient Foolhardy and daredevil ***************** HAYDEN, BACH, WAGNER, RACHMANINOFF TAURUS Traditional Patient and reliable Warmhearted and loving Persistent and determined Placid and security loving On the dark side.... Jealous and possessive Resentful and inflexible Self-indulgent and greedy *********************** BRAHMS, TCHAIKOWSKY GEMINI Traditional Adaptable and versatile Communicative and witty Intellectual and eloquent Youthful and lively On the dark side.... Nervous and tense Superficial and inconsistent ********************* SCHUMANN, RICHARD STRAUSS, JR. CANCER Traditional Emotional and loving Intuitive and imaginative Shrewd and cautious Protective and sympathetic On the dark side.... Changeable and moody Overemotional and touchy Clinging and unable to let go ******************* GEORGE SAND, VAN CLIBURN LEO Traditional Generous and warmhearted Creative and enthusiastic Broad-minded and expansive Faithful and loving On the dark side.... Pompous and patronizing Bossy and interfering Dogmatic and intolerant ****************** None, that were on my list VIRGO Traditional Modest and shy Meticulous and reliable Practical and diligent Intelligent and analytical On the dark side.... Fussy and a worrier Overcritical and harsh ******************* DEBUSSY LIBRA Traditional Diplomaitic and urbane Romantic and charming Easygoing and sociable Idealistic and peaceable On the dark side.... Indecisive and changeable Gullible and easily infuenced Flirtatious and self-indulgent *************** LISZT, VERDI, HOROWITZ SCORPRO Traditional Determined and forceful Emotional and intuitive Powerful and passionate Exciting and magnetic On the dark side.... Jealous and resentful Compulsive and obsessive Secretive and obstinate *************** PADEREWSKI, STRAUSS, JR., COPELAND SAGITTARIUS Traditional Optimistic and freedom-loving Jovial and good-humored Honest and straightforward Intellectual and philosophical On the dark side.... Blindly optimistic and careless Irresponsible and superficial Tactless and restless ******************* BEETHOVEN, BERILOZ, FRANCK CAPICORN None that I could find It seems Aries has the most with 4. Mozart - 27th January - Aquarius. (For a moment I hoped he was going to be a Capricorn, like me.)
Aquarians are visionary - they have the ability to combine ancient tradition with up to the minute thinking and ideas, they are happy with the concept of doing things very differently but also honouring the tried and trusted. Ultimately, Aquarians suspend judgment and are interested in the way the world works as an observer, an onlooker. It's no wonder that sometimes Aquarians can feel like aliens or step outside the tribe to create ideas and concepts that the rest of us will eventually catch up with, one day.
Good things: Humanitarian, friendly, independent, quirky, willing, progressive, an original thinker, inventive, creative, loyal, idealistic yet rational.
Bad things: Very unpredictable, and will stubbornly choose to behave contrary to what is expected. It's all a game and the intention is to stay free from restriction. They neither like to be considered boring or conventional, and will delight in challenging your beliefs about who you are.

Gosh, I'm sorry, MaryRose and Ragnhild. I did this list last night when I was tired, so I never thought about including some of us in with the "big shots." Thanks, Frycek and MaryRose for your additions. I agree ...some scraping of the barrel might be evident here...Elvis Presley and Bowie. I remember years ago when they were talking about putting Elvis on a stamp. I was incensed! Of all the great and admirable people they could chose, they would chose him? I told my husband that the day that Elvis is on that stamp is the day I'm moving to Canada because our country has gone completely nuts. Well, I'm still in the U.S. So much for my degree of indignation. Kathleen

Dear Kathleen - I didn't mean that YOU had left us out. I meant that history had! But I have been scraping that barrel some more and found:
Balakirev (2nd Jan 1837) Bruch (6th Jan 1838) Chabrier (18th Jan 1841) Pergolesi (4th Jan 1710) Poulenc (7th Jan 1899)
BTW I think Elvis was gorgeous. Even if he is, indeed, no Chopin in the music department. And I love his voice; I wonder if Chopin could sing? I am sure he had good - probably perfect - pitch, but maybe his lung condition prevented his voice quality from expressing itself.

PS It's true that Pisces does seem to be extremely well represented:
Thomas Arne, Bach's father JA Bach, Delibes, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Samuel Barber, Czerny, Rossini, Smetana, Vivaldi.. as well as the ones named by Kathleen at the top.

There has always been something a little "strange" about me. When all the kids were swooning over Elvis and the Beatles, I was listening to Frank Sinatra, singing songs by the greatest songwriters. Sammy Cahn, Irving Berlin, Rogers & Hammerstein, and on and on. And talk about music and the bands he had backing him up...Count Basie, Gordon Jenkins, Neal Hefti, Tommy Dorsey, and on and on. Why don't they put Frank Sinatra on a stamp? Some dear friends of ours gave me this on my last birthday. It's a treasure. Frank was a Sagittarius. BTW. So is my husband. Kathleen

Congrats, MaryRose, on 30 years of bliss and happiness ( :p ). Or at least I hope they were. My husband and I just celebrated of 40th. I had to remind him of it, so then he asked what I wanted or if we should go out to dinner. I said: "Just give me the money." Actually, it is pretty spooky on the Libra sign, health-wise. It says Libras will have kidney and back problems. And that's exactly the two health issues that have been bothering me for years. Kathleen

Pisces and Aquarius do tend to be artistic and creative, as well as sensitive and moody! So, yes, there are a lot of artists (in all forms of art) who are born under those Sun signs. Pisces is a Water sign, so the ebb and flow of creativity is second nature to those born under that Sun sign. Aquarius is an Air sign, always in motion and with a strong connection to the "unseen," which often leads Aquarians to artistic endeavors as a means to express that connection. As for pairings- both my husband and I are Aries, as is our youngest daughter. That puts three cardinal Fire signs in the same house! And we've managed to last almost 29 years so far...

Shhh, don't tell my husband. But a fella I dated over 40 years ago was a Picses. And I still carry a slow burning torch for him. He was very deep and pensive. And, as the Zodiac indicted, very sensitve. We would have never made it to 40 years. I have too big of a mouth. Kathleen

I am so happy that you found some Capricorns before I returned to this thread. Both Poulenc and Scriabin has made music with an unexpected kind of beauty. Maryrose: I would have loved to hear Chopin sing, I would think singing was part of his childhood education - but he was probably not as good as Johan Sebastian... It seems like the Aries are my kind of men, but where are they.... Ragnhild

[/b] Chopin did sing in the choir at the Warsaw Lyceum as a young teenager. According to George Sand when melodies came to him while he was away from the piano he sometimes would hum or sing them softly to her. And you're right. His ability to sing expressively would've been quite impaired as an adult. He was always short of breath and sometimes so hoarse he could barely talk.

Ah yes, I thought of him when compiling my list, but then forgot to look up his birth date. I love his music. Frycek: Thank you for your comments about Chopin's singing. I had never thought about it, and yet, I should have because he did love the opera. I tell you one thing. When I get a melody of his in my brain, I hum it constantly throughout the day. Kind of drives me crazy. Ragnhild: Are you looking for a possbile "significant other?" We'll be happy to post this, with your permission of course. Just kidding. Or maybe not!! Kathleen

Thomas Arne, Bach's father JA Bach, Delibes, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Samuel Barber, Czerny, Rossini, Smetana, Vivaldi, CPE Bach (the greatest Bach son), Telemann, Ravel, Handel, Chopin, Hugo Wolf, Johann Strauss Senior, Max Reger, I'm pretty sure there's more but to me Chopin and Handel are the two greatest pisces representatives

as for you capricorns you're leaving out the greatest capricorn composer: Nicolai Medtner as for pianists Alfred Brendel and Arturo Michelangelli share the same capricorn birthday of jan 5, and Josef Hoffman arguably the greatest piano technique of the 20th century is capricorn

Thanks for interjecting Hofman. I thought of him after I had created my (obviously very small) list. I have his book, and I need to read it all one of these days.

Kathleen, I just missed this one yesterday : Ragnhild: Are you looking for a possbile "significant other?"[/b] Sometimes my bad English makes me come short, but if I look for somebody I think its the "significant one" and not a "significant other" or..... ?? Ragnhild

"Significant other" is the phrase but "significant one" captures the meaning better.

So sorry Ragnhild. I think you are fantastic. To speak another language other than your own is quite an accomplishment; so you should be very proud of yourself. And most definitely, significant "one" is the better of the two. English is filled with many "idioms" making it so difficult to learn. And idiom (if I remember correctly) is a word or phrase that might use a set of words in a strange or peculiar way. "No, it wasn't me." The No isn't needed in this sentence. "It wasn't me." is sufficient. Monday next. This means the Monday following the up coming Monday...confusing even to me! For instance: "I'll catch you tomorrow." Obviously doesn't mean that one person is going to be thrown at the other, and the other person will "catch" them. It really means: "I'll see (or talk) to you tomorrow. Or "He's on the ball." Or "She's a straight arrow." I'm sure your language has these also. Sorry about the jokes you might miss. We'll try to make any future ones more understandable. Kathleen
