Hi!
Im now learning Bachs Menuet. Its not really a difficult piece but I dont want to just hit the right notes and exact rythm, I want also add ˝musicality˝. So, Im trying to play right hand very legato (only teh notes that have a point I play very staccato and loud) and left hand more staccato than legato.
is this Ok? Any suggestions?

Thanks

You might want to post this on the teachers forum as well. Do you mean Minuet in G Major?

These minuets from the Anna Magdalena Bach notebook are usually played with a 'non-legato' or 'portato' left hand. This means 'detached'. So don't exactly play them staccato, but don't tie the notes together as well. They should be seperated clearly. I guess you are already playing it like this because you say you play the left hand more staccato than legato. Just make sure the notes don't sound sharp like when playing staccato, they should just feel clearly detached to the listener.

Another thing to think about is the tempo. This is a dance so you will want to keep the tempo fairly regular.

Of course if nobody in the room is dancing you may take some liberties.

Thanks!
Yes, the minuet is in G major.
The tempo is: allegro. How many beats per minute is this?
Another thing, I play the right hand very legato, however on notes that have a point under them I play very staccato and also loud - louder than others. Is this OK?
And a question related to the previous one: which notes should I ˝stress˝, play more loud. Probably the first beat of the measure. But how about the notes that have a point under them? Should I play them as loud, or even louder than previous ones (tied eighth notes)

Yeah you should stress the first notes of each measure. That will also get the dance effect Copper was talking about. You have to imagine people dancing on your music, so the pulse has to be heard very clearly. Staccato notes don't have to be stressed. When the composer wants you to stress a note when it's not a note you would usually stress for the rhytm, he can use this sign: '>' under the note. Also, look where the melody is headed. It will usually work towards a certain point. Usually you can recognize this point by looking for the highest note in a section before it goes down again. Stressing the highest note gives a nice effect too.
