With respect of course... am·a·teur Pronunciation Key (m-tūr, -tr, -chr, -chr, -tyr)
A person who engages in an art, science, study, or athletic activity as a pastime rather than as a profession.
Since I do not play piano as my profession, that makes me an amateur.
A 5 hour practice day is rare I assure you. It does happen though. Maybe once or twice a month maybe less. I never keep track of such things but know that it does happen.
When I first started to learn piano 13.5 years ago
I started out by learning Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata 1st movement. I spent 5 hours a day for the first 2-3 months learning to read bass clef and developing my left hand. My wife will vouch for that by the way!
I spent the next 12 years learning other pieces all by myself. I only started lessons about 1.5 years ago.
I have a little bit of an obsessive compulsive personality and it waxes and wanes with other "hobbies" but music has been in me since I was born into this world and it will remain in me until my death.
I only wish, and used to dream about making my living with music. I still do dream about it but I am firmly planted in reality.
I have three beautiful daughters to raise. My wife and my daughters are my world and I would not trade them for anything including a dream.
I make my living designing and programming computer systems as a self-employed individual. I am one half of a stay-at-home parent team. When work gets too stressful I can simply go upstairs and play my piano for 15 minutes or more, play chess (yes chess!) with my 4 year old, or we will watch Dora The Explorer or whatever she wants to do like tea parties, Polly Pockets etc.
In the evenings I review/help out with homework for my older two and we review their scales and music they are learning for school. Currently they have chair challenges that they are preparing for next week so we are very busy!
I am living a dream.
