Hello, I just want to know if you do happen to listen to a piece of music/song and you do not have the scores, do you actually be able to play exactly the same ? I believe most of the more advanced pianist here with good aural will be able to do so but how about the rest especially beginnners ???

Do you actually go to the piano and try to find note by note until you more or less get the tune .... well it may sound silly but I do have a few songs recently which I do not have the songsheet and I try to find all the notes this way. I played the melody to my wife and she says the tune is Almost right though of course not as good as the true piece/song as it has all the accompaniment. One side note, of course I am not spending too much time on this from my actual practice.

So can I have your thoughts and opinions please ?????

And also is the ability to recognise the basic 12 tones help to play a piece of music faster. I am not saying that you listen to a piece of music and you play it right away but rather, try as little time as possible to get "MOST" of the right notes under your fingers.

Yeah, playing by ear. I try to do the same thing. You would think that if we could hum a tune, then we should be able to play it eh? I'm guessing that it takes a combination of practice and practice.

It is the same process as sight reading while singing.

Yes, if you can hum a melody you should be able to play it, at least in an easy key.

Solfegio is the formal way to go.

One of the exercises in the Faber Adult Piano Adventures is to complete the tune from an incomplete score. I'm finding it difficult right now, but with practice I'm getting better.

I've tried doing this before, but I just get frustrated. Without a score, I just sit at the piano with a blank stare. I still need a score for some of the scales!

It depends on how difficult the piece is. Could I sit down after one hearing of a fugue and play it, a la Mozart? No friggin' way.

Can I play "Happy Birthday" or some other easy "folk song" by ear? Yes. A very, very basic rendition. The biggest trick is to have a handful of chords ready at your beck and call for your left hand to throw in there.

Good candidates are always I, IV, V and V7. They'll get you through many a song.

add the ii7 and you have a workable, if uninspired, first ending. ( ii7 V7 I) .... if you get that far.
