Nice job, funburger. Your playing is getting better all the time. Mine, on the other hand, . . . well . . . I seem to be stuck in a rut. Your piano sounds nice, too. Aren't you the one who bought sight unseen off ebay? You got very lucky, indeed.

Hi, funburger, I just listened to your song and I thought it was very good. I have no idea about how to compose, but my teacher taught me how to improvise a bit with some chords and melody. Your song was all, how to describe it, complete, I'd say - dark, brooding, a bit monotonous, but ok if your lost that's how it is. Of course your mother did not like it - soo dark. You expressed your feelings well, hey, get better soon (I mean your mood not your playing)!

I agree with Peppermint, FUnburger. YOu did a terrific job, and I'm so jalous of your grand. But you have to admit it is dark and broody. So I guess when your Mum said she didn't like it, she just meant she didn't like something dark and broody. It's original and very expressive. Can you do the same on a cheerfull day? Bet she'd like the result!

I found it interesting, it is quite intriguing hearing your creative side at work to be honest, doodling around and writing songs and creating your own melodies and stuff is a healthy habit to get into (IMHO)

Funburger - I think I felt where you wanted to go with this.... only our ability and imagination can hold us back. You have a very big imagination... this undertaking is totally cool!

I really dug piece. Why? It was a bit dark... and a bit sexy, too. It was like someone walking and contemplating next steps....I see the weather cool, season is changing, perhaps.

That's very creative of you to write an original score when you're bored. I think people tend to write when they're filled with thoughts and they need to put them somewhere - put them on paper... or on write an original melody.

patty-i dont know anything about composing either, i just got bored. have you ever seen the alfreds book 2 (snore, snore, snore). same on a cheerful day hmmm, nope. seems like this is the type of music that always comes out no matter what the day, well some funny blues songs about a cheeseburger, that was hilarious!!!

sharon, yeah, sure thats where i was going with this. honestly i just get bored and this is what i do. keeps me busy for only a bit:) keeps my mind off of dang alfreds. thanks for listening. still tired now though. had to practice and i literally went to sleep again and just got back up.


ps. to everyone who listened, i know its a dark moody song, i should have put a disclaimer about that, however the original version was terribly tragic made even my husband cry, so i changed it to just dark. i didnt want to make everyone on pianoworld cry....then who would i have to talk to if everyone is running for their prozac, and others the bottle...heheheehehe. just want to say thank-you for listening and the comments. i was really expecting something like that sucks....like my mom said.

I don't think it sucks, but so what if it does? This is your first composition (or one of the first)... it's not supposed to be good. Do you think Beethoven's or Bach's or Burt Bacharach's (the Three Great B's) first composition was a masterpiece? When you start out doing something new, it's perfectly all right to suck at it (that's why you're a beginner). My advice: keep on making little compositions like this, and you'll automatically improve to a point where the people who used to scorn you will actually be impressed. And enjoy yourself on the way there.

Well, it DOESN'T suck!! It's gorgeous!! I really enjoyed it, and I think you should just keep on composing. You're really good at it.

Speaking of which, I played a song for someone once, that I was still working on, and I told them that, and yeah, I fumbled and stumbled a little. (It was a difficult piece.) At the end of it, they said, "Next time you play for someone, you should make sure that it's worth hearing." You can bet I won't be playing for them again, anytime soon. Some people just have very narrow hearts and are unable to keep from being negative.

Some people do not have a musical mind, they are not able to see the potential in a piece of music that is still being worked up.

People that are into composing will often listen to 8 bars of an original composition and be able to tell that it has potential.

I can do the same thing with movies. Within the first five minutes of a movie I can tell whether or not it will be amazing or not (to my liking anyway). My feelings on this are right about 90% of the time.

With music it is the same for me but I only know I will love a song 50% of the time and the rest of the time I get nothing. It is only after listening to it a dozen or so times that I know whether it is a keeper for me or to toss it. This applies to solo piano because current music of the rock and pop styles either click with me instantly or I just do not like them from the get go.

My most recent experience with solo piano was with Einaudi. I listened to his music in last months piano bar and watched a thread with a clip of his music and within 30 seconds my brain latched on. I have listened to that cd allmost everyday since I received it.

Funburger, why the dark brooding? It seems out of character to your upbeat personna. Hope everything is OK. I think the piece has potential but don't work on it unless you're in a melancholy, blue mood. One of Rachmaninov's greatest works was composed when he was in his darkest hour, still upset over his thrashing by the critics over his 1st piano Concerto, what does he come up with? One of the most beloved not to mention popular piano concerto's ever written.

The best stuff of artists comes from the inspiration of what they feel at the time they create. I like it because you created it. Now put on a face!

vintagefingers--it is a bit hard to explain the mood, as its like a haunting shadow that follows me around and every once in a while it reminds me its still there, covers me with darkness until i can once again be set it free...... i know stupid analogy but i dont know how to explain it any other way. smiles for you:)
