Wiosna (Spring in Polish) at transcription for solo piano by Lizst of a song (voice with accompaniment) by Chopin. It's a sad spring. The words to the poem Chopin set to music are about a bereaved lover facing the first spring after his beloved has died. http://prs.net/play/3MEpKOAK8Hz-koGX-8Rgig.html

This one is just lovely. To me it sounds a little "folk-tune" - could almost have been Grieg Maybe I will look for it some time, it would be my first attempt to play Liszt. Do you speek Polish, Frycek ? Ragnhild

I speak some French and a little Russian, not one word of Polish. I just know a man who does. It would be a good first Liszt piece. It's very easy for Liszt.

I heard it on a Cortot plays Liszt CD. No, unfortunately I couldn't find it online. I had to order a copy of Chansons Polonaise (French obviously) from Sheet Music Plus. That was all they had.($8.00) It has all six of the Chopin transcriptions Liszt did. If you want a copy William and the scanner can work something out this weekend.

I found the background information about Wiosna on the net, unfortunately I dont't have the site bookmarked, but the article gave the background for all six of the Chopin songs that Liszt transcribed. I've never seen the Chopin piece, just listened to a ghastly midi of it that reproduced the voice portion electonically (shudder.) It sounded as though much of the melody would be carried by the singer. The Liszt version is apparently about twice as long and not intended to be sung.

In "The Chopin Companion" edited by Alan Walker, there is a whole section devoted to the songs. Just a part of the music, but all the words, translated into English.

Frank that ISN'T me playing. That's a link to the Classical Music archives site, the only place I can find it. I play OK but not wonderful. I took lessons from the time I was 5 until I was 17 and then had a pianoless life for the next 30 years. I've been back at if very hard for the past couple of years.

Well, Frycek, we finally get the "story" on you. Twelve years of lessons (wow), then 30 years of having no piano (double wow). Sounds like me in just one aspect, however. The 30 years of non-piano. Kathleen

Sounds like me in just one aspect, however. The 30 years of non-piano. Kathleen [/b] Here's the expanded version of "the story" from the "Why did you quit piano?" thread last summer. I never really intended to quit. As a teenager I practically lived at the piano. I took lessons from the time I was five until I left home for college at seventeen. At first I tried to keep up my playing but I kept being run out of the music department practice rooms. Without a opportunity to practice my skills deteriorated to the point of embarrasment so I eventually stopped playing even when I did have the opportunity. After that adulthood took it's toll in the from of marriage, poverty, motherhood, illness. My husband was disabled, I was working two jobs and had no time (let alone cash) for a piano. Mama wouldn't give up my old upright because it was "too much trouble to move, I didn't have a place to put it, she didnt' want to rearrange her living room" ,etc. The piano had been out of my life for so long by then that I really didn't try very hard to get it. Mama willingly turned it loose when my daughter was seven, ironically wishing her grandchild to take lessons! I was glad to have it for my daughter, but by then I no longer considered myself a player. My daughter took no interest in it and it sat idle for another 10 years, until my husband decided he wanted to get it tuned up and noodle around a bit. He never did a thing with it either but he did get it tuned. The next Christmas I decided to try to pick out a few carols. I was like a reformed alcoholic succumbing to that first drink. Within a month I was back to practicing three-four hours a day. End of story.

Thank for sharing Frycek. The piece has a haunting beauty that emotes a sorrow and solitary feel but at the end maybe a hope to move on? I had to listen several times, very nice.

What a lovely piece of music Frycek. Thanks for posting it! I did a search on Wiosno on Sheet Music Plus and found 2 books, neither of them for $8.00. Can you post some further info (i.e. the publisher) and the exact title of the book. I also did a search on Chansons Polonaise and came up empty. Best regards and thanks again, Roger

Sorry Roger. I must've been asleep when I typed that, either that or wishful thinking. The book I bought was $15.95 ($18 something including shipping.) It's the one below. As I said earlier I'm sure my husband can scan it if need be. I don't minding sending interested parties jpgs but I'd feel a little nervous posting it. It's only two pages.
6 Chants Polonais de Chopin Your price $15.95
6 Chants Polonais de Chopin Piano Solo. By Franz Liszt. Editions Durand. Size 8.5x11.5 inches. 24 pages. Published by Durand. (50560217)

Frycek,
I just checked my link here at my office and it opened fine. One does need to have Adobe Acrobat installed on ones machine for it to display (Acrobat will open inside your browser).

Can't thank you all enough. Worked on it for a while last night, couldn't wait to get up this morning to practice again before going to work.
Indeed, beautiful.
