I never really intended to quit. As a teenager I practically lived at the piano. I took lessons from the time I was five until I left home for college at seventeen. At first I tried to keep up my playing but I kept being run out of the music department practice rooms. Without a opportunity to practice my skills deteriorated to the point of embarrasment so I eventually stopped playing even when I did have the opportunity. After that adulthood took it's toll in the from of marriage, poverty, motherhood, illness. My husband was disabled, I was working two jobs and had no time (let alone cash) for a piano. Mama wouldn't give up my old upright because it was "too much trouble to move, I didn't have a place to put it, she didnt' want to rearrange her living room" ,etc. The piano had been out of my life for so long by then that I really didn't try very hard to get it. Mama willingly turned it loose when my daughter was seven, ironically wishing her grandchild to take lessons! I was glad to have it for my daughter, but by then I no longer considered myself a player. My daughter took no interest in it and it sat idle for another 10 years, until my husband decided he wanted to get it tuned up and noodle around a bit. He never did a thing with it either but he did get it tuned. The next Christmas I decided to try to pick out a few carols. I was like a reformed alcoholic succumbing to that first drink. Within a month I was back to practicing three-four hours a day. End of story.
