Thanks LeadFingers

As Arias said "you got to have a hat to play the blues" and two of the hottest hats going now are the Boston Red Sox and Nascar No 8

I'm waiting for the book to get here and kicking myself for not going the extra few bucks for quicker shipping! A hat sounds way cool, got to be a blues hat though. I know... a pork pie hat. Yeah, nothin says the blues more than that.

General question: What level of proficiency is recommended for this material. I've heard great things about this book, and was planning to get into it later on, assuming that I should be a little further along (currently working through 3rd Alfred's adult book). Just checking. thanks for any feedback, and enjoy the group!

The range of difficulty varies throughout the book. There are pieces there on the beginning level, intermediate and towards the back of the book some of the pieces seem even a little more advanced. There's a CD that comes with the book so you can listen to all the songs. It's a big book over 200 pages. It has a lot of blues history in it.It talks about different styles of blues in detail as well as how to improvise. ;\)

Pork pie hat and shades is cool, though the Monk wore a beret.
Dr. John has a stable of hats. I want an eyepatch like James Booker, tho':

Good news on the book angelojf!

pertof1 have you played any of the pieces in the book yet?

Saw, I found a sample page from Alfred's 3rd adult book. IBP is right about at that level, so you'll be fine with it.

HAYYY! you got my book! I ordered it first!

Seriously, I'm glad yours finally arrived.
I'm not saying I've resorted to childish behaviour or anything,
but I've started kicking the mailbox an telling it to pass it along to that slow mailman. \:D

Well I'm going hat shopping here in a few hours,
Maybe that will speed up things. (hay it worked for AngeloJF!)

Pastafarian: Yes, I have played a few in the book.I have played the following:
Beginner's Blues[/b] pg 12-very easy, very basic. However , the one on pg 15 is a little more interesting, There's a drive on the right hand on the upbeat of 4 and the left hand plays the downbeat.
Beginner's Boogie[/b] pg 18-uses 8 notes to the bar,the left hand is interesting, it gives the song the boogie feeling.
I've also attempted ,but not completed pg 22 Blue Third Blues[/b], this is my favorite so far, it has a nice blues feel to it. I like the melody. The grace notes in the first 2 bars of each line gives the song some color. The left hand is tricky. It helps to practice left hand over and over again before putting it together with the right hand.

I've started a "reference" thread on the pieces in the book, so we all have a central repository of tips, tricks, observations and primal screams related to the pieces in Improvising Blues Piano.

If y'all want to post your pearls of wisdom in this thread, I'll edit the other thread so we have a central resource. I'll try to attribute each gem to its author. Or, if you want to adopt a piece of your own (hint, hint) \:D ;\) , feel free to post a reply for that piece in the "IBP: One Piece at a Time" thread. So far, we've got a post for the two "Beginner's Blues" combined and one for "Blue Third Blues".

I should have a rather unhappy version of "Happy Blues" at the following URL . Can someone let me know if they can hear it?

If so, I'll post my improvisations here. That should cheer up anyone having doubts about their ability to keep up ! :p ;\)

HEY PASTA:I Like that Happy Blues song you played for us! Is that your version of it or is that the one played from the CD out of the book? Either way , it sounds good, and it's worth learning. It'll be a great day when everyone else recieves their books.

Arias:

I got a ton of hats, just no blues hats. \:\(
Lets face it, your run-of-the-mill ballcap, black leather cowboy hat, or an outback hat, just don't speek of the blues. I guess I'll just have to wear my brown leather ballcap (it looks down an out) till I find just the right Porkey-pie hat.

Aw shucks...thanks guys. I recorded it on my cheap electronic keyboard (unweighted keys) because it's in the basement next to the computer. I learn all the pieces on my upright piano tho', 'cause I need the weighted keys to keep my outta control fingers in check.

The piece is more-or-less the same as the written piece, minus a repeat. Also, I made the first note of the bass line in each measure staccato, 'cause I think it sounds funkier that way. As well, the LH two bar intro is added as are the chords at the end. I don't have an improv worked up for it yet, but that's because I don't have a cool enough hat \:\( ;\) :p .

Try this Amazon link http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0...5Fencoding=UTF8

I got mine from "Imagine this".
Money well spent on 2 day or overnight shipment, as I opted for 3-5 day ship, ordered on 1 jun got it on 17 jun. Still beats the 6-8 weeks leadtime everyone else has.

PS Don't forget to order a Cool Hat as one DIDN'T come with the book. try this link http://www.johnhelmer.com/prod.itml/icOid/88

Turn the brim down when you're real blue.

Arrgghh! I could throttle Amazon.com...

I ordered the IBP book, and the status I got back was this:

Shipping estimate for these items: June 19, 2006 - June 20, 2006
Delivery estimate: June 22, 2006 - June 26, 2006

So, I thought I'd be in good shape - shipped yesterday or the day before, probably be here by Monday/Tuesday. That's the way it USUALLY works.

Today (6/21), I got THIS message:

Shipping estimate for these items: July 20, 2006 - July 21, 2006
Delivery estimate: July 29, 2006 - August 9, 2006

Evidently, there must have been a run on this book..(wonder where that came from?) I've cancelled that order, and ordered from another vendor who has it in stock. It'll still take until mid-week, but at least I'll have it before 7/1.

bump...

... and I've got "Sad Blues" memorized. It's almost up to tempo, but for the dreaded "triplet" measures, so now I'm going to focus on the devilish triplet pickups in "Blues for Booker". To get these right, I'm just going to loop the offending measures at 40-50 bpm until they're muscle memories. The rest of the piece is OK.

That's chapter 1. (We don't discuss "Trill Blues" ).

I don't feel the need to rush onto chapter 2 since there are a few things I want to do with some of the pieces in chapter 1. Some of you who don't have your books yet may get to chapter 2 before me. ;\) :p
