I'm 38, been learning for 10 months, self-taught (so far). I'm using the Alfred's Adult All-In-One Piano Course.

This forum is unbelievably helpful. (Now, the Coffee Room, well, that's another story...)

Many of us are just starting out. I'm 43 and have been at it just about as long as you. Like Jerry, I'm also doing the Alfred "All-in-one". I've also just started the Sudnow program.

Lots of people here willing to help in any way they can. Its a wonderful resource.

welcome! when i started about 4 years ago, i learned basic piano playing from a book just like you. just be sure your book is a good one and follow it through.

I just started taking lessons last week. I'm using the Alfred's Adult Course also. The songs seem pretty lame, but I can play them now. More than I could say a few wekks ago.

Are you going to look for a teacher? One on one can be very helpful. You might think you are doing something correctly but may have misinterpreted. A teacher can help you through those instances.

I have been playing on and off for 2 years(feel like one year though). I actually started by sitting in with my daughters' group lessons 4 years back. In the process, I have bought many classical, pop, xMas books(with and without CD's.

that helps me tremendously from using Scorch and downloaded some popular classics.

I am also collecting a lot of classical CD's, and getting help from my pianist friends.

I am not looking for a teacher yet but maybe in the future.

I'm another Alfred Adult All-In-One worker. When I got to page 73, I moved on to Aldred's Jazz/Rock Course. (Well, a few pages of it, anyway!)

I also got Alfred's Complete book of scales, Chords, Arpeggios & Cadences, but haven't worked on it at all.

Instead, I'm focusing exclusively on Hanon, The Virtuoso Pianist in 60 Exercises. Can't quite get up to M.M. 108 without playing sloppily (been trying since Jan. 1 w/exercises 1&2). Doin' good at M.M. 96, though!

KEEP UP ALL THE SELF-STUDY, FOLKS! IT BEATS NOT PLAYING AT ALL! (Tough I do hope to get a teacher one day...)

I see alot of people use Alfreds All-in-one, I'm using Progressive Method book 1, at the moment, but am going to buy Progressive method book, a complete book for piano. But maybe Alfreds is better?

I have been to a couple of lessons years ago when I was 14, (should of stuck with it at 7) but moved and didin't bother to get back into it. I'm not going to go to a teacher, but I have a friend who is a pianist, so I might ask her if I need to.

hi guys, I am also learning from a book. speaking of good book... what is an example of one? because the book I am having is really poor... currently reading 360 pages of piano practice instruction ;_;

I'll add another vote for the Alfreds All in One Adult course (Book 1) but by the time you get through it you'll not want to continue with book 2 (The method pieces are REALLY boring). That would be a good time to consider getting a teacher to help with all the mistakes your bound to be making. He/She can then also help you select some repetoire appropriate for your level.
