I like Adult Beginner, though I only fit the "Adult" description (I started back after many years of not playing, but am at a relatively advanced level). I describe myself as an "amateur," meaning someone who plays solely for the love of it and not because I'm a professional or training to be a professional. If the name were to change, I would suggest "Amateur Pianists' Forum."

Of course, I am a classical music nut and tend to spend more time in the CP forum than here, so feel free to ignore my suggestion. laugh

You know, recently I've been active in this forum... but I am beginning to realize it just may not be for me. I'm neither an adult or a beginner, or an amateur for that matter.

But the study groups are fun to participate in.

Well, then, all this discussion is backfiring!! Chobussy, the AB forum welcomes *everybody* with an interest in piano. You may not be interested in some of the threads that ask questions about basic music notation and theory matters...you're far beyond that, and that's okay. But by all means join in the study groups.

Maybe we should revisit the idea of keeping the AB name but changing the description to the "welcoming players of all interests and skill levels."

That would ruin the intent of this forum though.

I'm not gonna lie, if I had it my way, I'd completely re-organize these boards. I even wrote a little something about it in the suggestion forum. Of course... no one responded, because the fourm is dead. And that is exactly my point.

Hey Monica... speaking of joining study groups... up for some DeBussy? We're doing Clair de Lune! Can't get much better than that!

Thanks, Chobussy, but I'm over-extended with the study groups that I'm in now. I am too embarrassed to even admit how many days it's been since I practiced "Linus and Lucy." whome

Clair de Lune is on my list of classical pieces to learn eventually, though.

You know, I've just had an epiphany: The name matters, but it doesn't matter all that much. The AB forum is a great place, but what makes it great is NOT its name but the group of people who participate. Some of these people are brand new beginners; some are people who could (and do) make a living playing professionally. Somehow all of us found our way to this forum, in part either because of or in spite of its name. Let's just enjoy it as the great place it is and not get too hung up over finding the perfect name for it.

I'd replace "Adult Beginner" with "Amateur".

The title ADULT BEGINNER singles out this group, and may be interpreted as an invitation to adults and/or beginners only. Surely, there are non-adults as well as non-beginners who can participate but choose not to because of the initial barrier.

If you need a special area for Adults or Beginners, then make sub-forums to hold topics specifically dealing with their needs (as well as special sub-forums for non-Adults or Advanced Amateurs for that matter).

Jello, while anyone who wants to participate is welcome here, the point is that this forum meets the needs of a specific group. It was originally created because a need was felt.

To everyone, please remember, none of us can just change the title. If everyone felt the title should be changed, we'd need to decide on a selection of new title options (it would be an incredibly difficult process to come up with a "short" list of titles) then we'd need to take a vote (and the problem of how to conduct the vote would be difficult to overcome.) Then, we'd have our selection, and we'd have to present it to Frank (the owner) and he would just as likely say no as not. In the previous discussion (linked on page 1 of this thread) it was decided that it was best to leave the name and description as is, and add this explanation. No description is going to satisfy everyone, but hopefully this will help new members to better understand what kind of memebers are currently here.

Thanks for the clarification ShiroKuro. This forum is for adult beginners. There is really no need for this discussion!

Great idea! We could call it the Adult Beginner's Forum.

You all have gone mad. :p

The one thing I do like is how we all help eachother. Not much of that I am better than you, I was more expressive, I play bla bla grade level bla bla and I have only been playing 6 months and you have been playing 2 years ha ha ha stuff around here.

This is a forum where mature people can come and feel good about learning and maybe even play a few songs for others.

I like the name we have now. Lets keep it and allow all who enter to understand the atmosphere and lingo used around here.

Now, everyone break and hit the keys. laugh

I would hate to have this forum limited to "adults" only. I learn as much from our young people as I do from those closer to my own age. As an adult, probably older than most of you, who is returning to the piano after a long absence, I find that I learn so much from this forum that I would like to keep it the way it is, open to anyone who wants to post.
For example, recently Alvaro-a young, exceptionally talented person posted his vidio of his playing of the Mendelssohn and Chopin compostions. I had never heard the Mendelssohn before, and immediately got a copy of it, and am studying it now. If people his age had been discouraged from posting on this forum, chances are we would have been deprived of hearing his wonderful playing, and of being introduced to a new composition.
When I have a sticky, technical question, I have posted it on the forum for professionals or semi professionals and have gotten wonderful help, and no one there has ever made me feel stupid for asking basic questions.
Also, I have asked questions on the Piano forum, and gotten good assistance with questions about care of my piano.

If someone posts things that are not of interest , all one has to do is just hit the delete button and pass on to another post.

But, let's not exclude anyone. Gaby Tu

With all due respect, to anyone who is coming into this discussion late, it would be increadibly helpful if you could read the first page of this thread, and the linked discussion found in the "Beginners???" thread. We're not suggesting this forum's name be changed, and we're not suggesting anything be done differently from the way things have been done up until now.

The purpose of this thread is to answer the questions and concerns that have come up several times in the recent past, from primarily (but not limited to) new members. The description at the top of this thread is meant to clarify what group(s) the ABF forum is geared to, but it is in no way meant to exclude anyone from posting here. No one has been told not to post here in the past, and I don't think anyone is suggesting we do so in the future. As Phlebas so kindly pointed out, if you are a PW member, you are able, and welcome, to post in any of the PW forums.

However, contrary to the way this post may sound, I'm not trying to say "no, we cannot talk about this anymore." And Gaby Tu, it probably sounds specifically like I'm talking directly to you, but I'm not (not completely anyway!) I'm just thinking that there are a lot of people who seem to not know all of the issues that have already been brought up and talked through. If anyone has read through this thread, and the "Beginners" thread, and still has concerns, by all means post them here.

Edited to add: I just edited the last paragraph of my explanation (in the first post in this thread.) Hopefully that will help to clarify things a little more.
