I will start my piano lessons in September. The reason why I learn piano is that I like classic music, I like piano, I want to know piano with the hope to draw attention and interest of my little daughter, 17 months old, to music later. Now I need a piano at home. I am a totally know-nothing about piano. So what a kind of piano should I have? I can afford till 3500€( Euro). I prefer a new one but maybe a used one is of much sense. A good one is better than a new one? Does the brand play a role? May I purchase via internet online shops? Much thanks and appreciation in advance for all your advice and help.

Hi lujah, and welcome to Piano World. I bet your daughter would love to have a piano and a parent that plays it.

You might post this question in the Piano Forum part of this site. They have lots of information about specific piano models, prices, availability, and other things you will want to know about.

You can get to that forum by 1) going down to the bottom of this page, and using the "Hop to" option (use the down arrow to the right) to go to the Piano Forum -

or, 2) go to the top of this page and click on Piano Forums at Piano World, and the Piano Forum will be the first choice listed.

Have fun in your piano search and learning to play.

Cathy

Many people suggest reading Larry Fine's book to educate oneself about acoustic pianos. This is the link for US amazon. May be you want to get it via the germany site.

Hi lujah and welcome.

This is just my opinion, but if I were in your shoes I'd buy an inexpensive weighted-key digital, possibly used. Since you are just starting yourself, you don't know for sure that you'll stick with it. And since your daughter is only 17 months, you have plenty of time to get a better piano later if you still want one or she shows interest. No reason to shell out a lot of money now.

Good luck with whatever choice you make! \:\)

Hi,

I've just finished a book called "Music, theBrain, and Ecstacy - How Music Captures our Imagination.. It's by Robert Jourdain and is first year reading requirement for University students. It's very technical in that it focuses on how we hear, understand and interpret music but at the same time is very 'laymanish.' I was totally facinated by it. I'm telling you this because of its references to how babies and young children hear and process music. It's really worthwhile reading if you want to encourage a child so young to be musical.
