Sharon! It's good to see you! The corsage I bought for you to wear to prom *finally* came in from the flower shop. I'll pack it on ice and send it to you. Hopefully it won't be too wilted.

Somehow, I think Edith Piaf said it all with her marvellous song: Le Droit d'Aimer. La Liberte d'Aimer just does not sound quite right, in France you are always free to do ANYTHING as long as you pronounce it properly!

Okay, all you french experts... we've been enjoying and talking about the Tiersen piece on the July piano bar. Can anybody give me the translation for the title?

Monica,

Une comptine is a song that children sing whilst playing a game to designate the one who has been eliminated in that round[1]... d'un autre été is literally "of another summer" meaning "a past summer" in this case.

"A counting song of a past summer"? confused

"Cheese Omelette" made more sense. laugh

[Actually, thank you, Michael. The title does make a lot of sense in context of that poignant video psychopianoman posted. It's been a long time since I've watched "Amelie," and I can't remember what scene this piece was accompanying, but I will assume it made sense there, too. smile ]

"cheese omelette" makes more sense!

A comptine is not just a song to count. It also describes any simple (traditional) song that children sing when they skip rope, or dance, juggle with balls, etc.

I think the word comptine in the piece of music is meant to imply nostalgia for an innocent time, carefree summer. Or carefree omelette... :-)

I was waiting for RockPeter to show up in this thread since
if anybody would know the translation, it would be Peter as he's from Montreal (French speaking part of Canada) laugh
