Dear Piano World, Scott Houston is one of my very favorites too and I am on his email list. When I write to him a brief fan email he always writes me back...He is number one in my book. Congradulations from me too Scott. Sandy B, Manassas Va., your fan for years now.

Just been looking at some of Scotts youTube clips. Is it common practice to play chords in left hand and melody on right or is this typical of his style and a lot of other 'by ear' musicians. I think it is very impressive.

@Gilbert
I think that those who play solo piano must play melody (in right hand), whilst those who just accompany a singer or another instrument (like flute) dont play melody (ie. chords in right hand)

I personally find it easier to play chords on right hand although I practice several hours a day on written music.

It may be easier but you must have the melody also. If you dont sing then you must play it on piano.

For example, one fairly easy and standard way of voicing chords for an accompaniment might include root, fifth, octave in the left hand and the inverted chord in the right hand. So, for a C chord, LH would play C G C, RH might play E G C. However, you'd need to experiment with alternate voicings to hear what fits.

Hey gang! Thanks for all the messages. I'm so sorry and embarrassed that it took me this long to see and acknowledge this kind thread. (Thanks Frank!) ...and yes Sid - guilty on all charges - I'm nervous I don't play well enough to match up to you forum "pros." I have three major projects all barreling down the pike simultaneously that have had me completely buried for more than two months. As a result, along with a lot of other things, my Forum participation has waned dramatically I'm sorry to say. Soon two out of the three should be wrapped up and I'll try to get back to the Forum more regularly. In any case, I can't tell you how flattering, shocking, affirming, and just plain fun this whole Emmy winning thing has been. Woo, hoo! As always, thanks so much for the nice words. Keep spreading the word - you CAN play piano for your own fun and enjoyment. Warm Regards all... Scott
