Hello! I'm very new, having just registered. I was searching the internet for piano sales in my area b/c I am verrrry interested in learning how to play. I started as a child in 5th grade and b/c of family circumstances, I was unable to continue. I definitely would need to start with purchasing a used one and I was just curious if any of you had any ideas on places to find something nice, but affordable. We have a "swap shop" on our local radio station and someone had a "piano to give away" so I'm waiting to hear back from her \:\)

I bought a piano from a person on Craig's list for $50, and for another $45 a technician got all the keys working and made it sound pretty normal. We moved it ourselves. We use it as an extra piano because we have four people practicing at our house, and while it's not great, it's better than no practice at all. Sometimes cheap pianos like that are not worth having in your house, but you can luck out. It's not hard to find a passable piano for $600 or less, and then you can trade up once you find you are going to stick with it.

Good luck and welcome to the forums!

Nancy

I would also consider the option of buying a digital.

I second Ishmael's suggestion (probably the better way to go), but nancy's suggestion is a pretty good one as well as long as you get one that's in good operating condition, I've noticed on some of the old acoustic consoles, even if all the keys work, the action may be really subpar (i.e., very hard to play softly etc)

Thanks for the tips! \:\) I really appreciate it! \:\)

I did hear back from the woman giving away the piano and we are picking it up this weekend. I know it may not be in the best of shape, but I need to start somewhere with the budget we are one, right?

Thanks again and I look forward to exploring this site further to learn more! \:\)
