I need a metronone, but I figured the device had evolved since I last had one 20 years ago. My teacher has a battery operated one. I went on line thinking it wouldn't be that hard to choose, but whoa! There were about 100 different ones just on one website I looked at. What should I choose?

If it might help, my teacher recommended the Korg MA30 (under $30 about anywhere) as a "best buy" metronome. I have not used one, I instead use the metronome built into my P90 keyboard.

Other than sufficient volume, it would seem that all a metronome has to do is click.

I have the Korg KDM1. I really like it because it is easy to use, has a dial control, and most of all, because it has volume control! The clicking noise is irritating to me if it's too loud.

I have a walnut wood Wittner. Its made in germany & very attractive looking (if thats an issue for you, it is for me, has to please the aesthetics!)It is a *wind up* looks very much (& sounds exactly) like the classis Seth Thomas ones from my childhood when I played clarinet.

Paid $80 bucks for it at the local music store. They list for $90 or so. They make plastic ones as well, don't know how they sound.

I went to the store and sampled a bunch, and wound up with the Sabine Zipbeat.

It has great variability, it makes a nice click instead of an electronic sound, and it makes a different sound for the end of the measure, with excellent variability for the number of beats in the measure. Also has LEDs that can go along with the beat, but I have enough to look at without looking at the LEDs.

$30 at my local music store. I might have been able to get it a little cheaper online, but (to drag in another thread) I like patronizing local dealers with good service.

I have the Korg MA30 as my teacher recommended. Seems to do just fine. Costs less than $20 if you shop around. My teacher told me to avoid mechanical ones since they vary somewhat in tempo. I can set mine to various time sigs and even do triplets.

I use this one: http://www.wwbw.com/Qwiktime-QT-5-Credit-Card-Metronome-i117205.music

which is small, loud, and cheap, about $10 US.

Same company makes tuners, which I didn't like as well as the Korg CA-30. But the metronome is fine. I don't know of a reason to pay more.
