I know a few people have offered to store the recordings, and that's fine.

But...
I'd like to have one copy of EVERY recording submitted[/b] so I can archive them.

I will build a section on Piano World to permanently post them all.

My thought is to have a place where everyone
who submits a recording can point and say...
"That's my recording, posted on Piano World"

I want to do this for two reasons.
1.) To acknowledge everyone who participates, whether or not they make it onto the CD.
2.) To have a collection that may be a starting point for our next CD:-)

Hi Frank. I could EASILY create a database on my site and have a simple upload function along with information such as the pianist's name, the composition title, composer, and length of time.

Jdsher made the point that we shoulnd't direct users to my site to register for something from yours. In that case, I would be more than happy to give you the PHP code for the upload page that would allow users to upload their recording onto your website. All that you would need to do is have a MySQL Database and be somewhat familiar with it. All you would really have to do is change the password, username, and tablenames in the PHP (very simple to do) to make it work.

I know it isn't the best thing to do, but if you would rather have people upload their things onto my site, I have a little example site set up:

http://www.tidbitfacts.com/piano

Note that that site doesn't have functioning uploading and posting capabilities yet as I threw them together in about 10 minutes. Give me a few days and we should be good!

Hi wldrumstcs,

I appreciate the offer to host the uploads for us, but I'd rather keep everything in the Piano World framework if possible.

I don't want people to have to jump around between sites for this project.

If you already have the structure set up, and are willing to share it, I should be able to set it up on our site (we have MySQL and PHP).

In fact I would welcome your help in creating the structure.

Hope you understand where I'm coming from.

Thanks again.

Regards,

- Frank B.

Absolutely! Let's see here, the registration page is all set! Here is the link:

http://www.tidbitfacts.com/piano/register.php

I will send you this same exact page, but rather with the source code so you could make it compatible with your site!

Check your PM/email, I sent you the PHP and some instructions. BTW, if you would like me to actually set up the database, let me know.

wldrumstcs and Frank,

Thanks!

If you intend to setup some kind of hosting/file upload facility for the Project, here are my suggestions with consideration to the subsequent work-flow to eventually get the CD package produced:
  1. Definitely use Piano World's existing framework!
  2. Recommend keeping it simple and stick to uploading these pieces:
    • The recording sound file (e.g., MP3, AIFF, and WAV)
    • A text file containing description/information about the submission.
    • A graphics file containing a picture to accompany the description
  3. Using Piano World's framework, each submitter would have to log in before he/she can upload any file -- and the uploaded files' filenames can be automatically prepended with the UserID/login so we always know who submitted which files.
  4. No need to have the submitter uploading all pieces in one shot, because some may submit multi-movement works in multiple sound files, some may choose not to submit a text file or not to submit a picture. Some pieces may get resubmitted for various reasons. So a simple file-uploading interface will do.
  5. The submitted files are basically "works in progress" and submitters may yet still choose to revise their submissions, so the uploaded files need not be exposed for others to download for the time being.
  6. The files will need to be accessed by three sets of people:
    • The "CD Engineering Team" who will be "mastering" or otherwise working on the sound files.
    • The "CD Booklet Team" who will be grabbing the text files and the graphics files to compile the CD booklet.
    • The "Coordinator" who will keep track of which submission is missing what pieces, make master list of material that will eventually be turned into a CD cover of sort that lists which track or which file on the CD is which piece(s) submitted by whom. (If it's okay with you, Frank, I'll volunteer for this role.)
  7. The "release form" cannot be submitted on-line because it will need to carry the submitter's real name and true signature. These should be mailed in, and Piano World/Frank should hold on to these documents. (This will be dealt with in greater detail later and is outside the scope of the "uploading/hosting" facility.)

Axtremus:

Frank and I are working together to achieve exactly what you listed there.

I am making the PHP and passing it on to Frank to put onto the site. I have made the registration page and set up the database, it's just that Frank need's to "OK" my script and upload it.

As for uploading the stuff, you basically nailed what I was thinking about doing. I haven't written the upload script yet, but will probably get around to it this weekend.

Frank:
I need to know how good you are with PHP/MySQL. I can make the script for using existing forum usernames/passwords, but because I am not too familiar with this particular kind of forum and its database, you would need to write the login code yourself, or you could give me all of the information required to make an artificial login from a different source other than the forum.

Translation: I need the information that the forums would normally require to login a user in order to login a user from a page entirely separate from the forum. In addition, I must be made aware of the table structure of the forum's database.

Dave
