A truck recently plowed into my house on the wall on which my piano was housed. The impact knocked the wall into my piano, but did no visible external damage to the piano but was sufficient to damage several strings. After the impact, several of the hammars were sticking up several inches. My question is; could the impact have caused damage to the hammars requiring that they be resurfaced? or would the resurfacing be a maintainance situation. The piano was completely overhauled in 1996, new everything. The insurance company is deducting the resurfacing, thus my inquiry. Wear and tear since 1996? or damage from the impact.

You should post this to the Tuner-Technician's forum, rather than here, which is the archives.

To answer your question, you should ask the person who is doing the work. I do not understand what happened to the piano from your description. I do not even understand how strings could be damaged from impact without damaging the exterior of the piano.
