Has anyone heard of a female jazz pianist called:-

Junko Orisky or similar name, I caught a clip of this on a video given to me and she is sensational, almost as good as Oscar!, problem being, that the program makers only showed a minute or so before we lost it and the piano was still playing in the back-ground but program now unrelated to her or jazz. Strange, but that's music 'non-lovers' for you.

Thanks a million.

Alan

There is a fine jazz pianist name Toshiko Akioshi. Might that be who you're thinking of? If so, she has a number of albums out under her own name and as the co-leader of the Toshiko Akioshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band.

Hope that helps. TGG

There is Junko Onishi. Unfortunately, Rhapsody doesn't have any of her stuff. frown

Swingal here some more info:

Junko Onishi (born in 1967) is a Japanese jazz pianist; she plays in the post-bop genre.
After studying at Berklee she moved to New York City, where she played with Joe Henderson, Betty Carter, Kenny Garrett, and Mingus Dynasty. She has also worked with Jackie McLean, Holly Cole, and Billy Higgins, among many others, and recorded four CDs as a leader.
Although she lists Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Ornette Coleman as her primary influences, her playing is also reminiscent of McCoy Tyner and contemporaries such as Kenny Kirkland and Mulgrew Miller (check out her solo on "Ja-Hed" from "Live at the Blue Note Tokyo" with alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett).

Hope this helps DPVJAZZ

Many thanks to all. I was most impressed by the rather short clip I saw and will now see what's available on recording hopefully a DVD.

Kind regards

Alan

Here you go, Al:

Here's a whole gaggle of 60 second samples from each track on these Onishi albums.

As I listen to her, I wonder how much of an influence Martial Solal was to her. For something absolutely out of this world, check out Martial:

A cross between Tatum and Tristano, and capable of controlled Cecil Tayloresque technique, Solal has absolutely no equal in jazz piano.
