How am I supposed to play the dotted half and quarter notes joined by the three bars? This is in a 1947 piece called The Teddy Bear's Picnic.

You may correct me if I'm wrong but the tremolo in the first bar is played over the full bar count and in the second bar it's played for half the bar count or one and a half. Tremolo marks usually connect to the two principal notes if they have bars and there is no likelihood of confusion. Hence the first bar is a joined tremolo. Otherwise they are separated as in the second bar example. But they are just tremolos nothing more, nothing less than that.

Yup, they are both tremolos.

It looks to me like the second tremolo and the dots on the dotted quarters were handwritten in. Have you tried playing the second measure without the tremolo? I just tried it, and it feels like a cadence at the end of a phrase without the tremolo.

The three bars connecting the treble notes
indicate 32nds, so this implies that the temolo
is played 4 to each beat note, which is
the 8th note, since one 8th note
equals four 32nd notes. So, you'd play
4-32nds to each 8th note: in the first
measure, 3 groups of 4 (G-B D-F, G-B D-F/
G-B D-F, G-B D-F/ G-B D-F, G-B D-F) for each
of the bass notes, the C octave and the B
octave; and in the 2nd meas., 3 groups of 4
for the bass Ab octave.

That tune brings back memories and was one of my first songs I played, in a simple melody of course. I picked it out as I did when teaching myself to play when still at school aged about 10 then. 68 years ago and still learning!
