Good Jazz transcription for "The Man I Love"

I am looking for a good transcription similar to a Real Book with alternate chord progressions. My real Book doesn't have that one and I would prefer not to spend $$$ for a whole new book for one song.

Would a CD or other recording help. I have heard quite a few different renditions that are a great inspiration. That is if a live recording would suit you. If so I can fish out a few to give some help.

Do these 6 measures of Gershwin's "The Man I Love" give a start? ... if of use, more can be sent. The simple LH chords are largely on the beat ... and the key is Eb Major. themanIlove

Something more intricate in the chords than Ray Charles, but not as far out as Bill Evans. Thanks for any help.

Hi!
Will see what I can find. I know Erroll Garner has recorded it Perhaps Oscar P. too, even Dave Mckenna. Have you a source in Detroit for such recordings.
Any of these would provide good inspirations. I can hear the music in my head and it's not too difficult to give a good beat to what was a ballad as written.
Best of luck
Swingal.

A tutor once told me that Real books just display chord changes at their most basic. You just add tensions such as 9ths, 13ths, etc as you become more experienced and what sounds good to you. I don't know if you can buy a Real book of standards that has exact jazz chord names unless its a folio of a particular musician's arrangements.

I have looked through about 100 plus CDs and only one with 'The man I love on ' that was a Benny Goodman recording some time min the late 30's I guess. Not what I think you want.
I have an Erroll Garner recording which is more stylish if Erroll is to your taste. My recording is on a Sterio LP made in France. If Erroll is to your taste this might fit the bill.
Having collected recorded music for some 60 years. I fear I'm not the worlds most organised man.
I may have others but it takes time to go through everything.
Perhaps try Amazon ? I would not let it beat me if I were in your position.
I think I have a CD of someone playing Gershwin and it will be a jazz recording for that is all mine are.

I have some copies of a few songs that I made off of an old, illegal, Real Book. Unfortunately I lost the book, ugh. I never played a lot of Jazz until recently so until now it didn't matter. What the book provided were 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths, but also had alterante ideas in parentheses above the suggested chord. Apparantly Hal Leonard now makes the Real Book, but it is not what it used to be. I have a great version of Georgia on My Mind that with out the book would have taken me 10 times as long to get to the point I am now. Since I first wrote this post I have found an abundance of great individuals that place their own transcriptions on leadsheets and provide them for others online. I have had a blast getting all I can...still, I have yet to find 'The Man I Love'... and I'm not even gay... not that there's anything wrong with that;)

I have found a great Eroll Garner version on Itunes. It's from 'the complete savoy master takes'. I think this is perfect. I was mostly listening to an Oscar Peterson version, but he's just too ridiculous to attempt.

Hi !
Well thats good news. Hope Erroll has picked a good key for you as some of his are very abstract. I have played the LP the other day so guess its the same recording a great and generous man whom I once had the pleasure of speaking to him 'back stage' when on a visit to England. A great loss to us all when he died.

Alternatively, you could use as a starting point the one written by / transcribed from the playing of George himself in 1924 found in this gem of a book:
Meet George Gershwin at the Keyboard 16 Song Hits arranged by the composer
2006 Faber ISBN 0-571-52677-2
